Tosen Gorge is the birthplace of the circular somen noodle flume and this city-run restaurant and attraction is visited by some 200 thousand people annually. Open year round, here diners can enjoy somen noodles whirling in spring water selected as one of the 100 best waters in Japan in the modern era. A popular ramen restaurant that is also one of Kagoshima's best located in the Temmonkan-dori shopping arcade. As its name implies in Japanese, the restaurant's specialty Tontoro Ramen is topped with pork that practically melts in your mouth. The broth, made with pork bones, chicken bones, and seafood, is surprisingly light, making it popular with the shop's women customers as well. The rice with roasted pork is also popular and includes a heaping helping of chashu roast pork made with neck meat, a rare delicacy of which only a small amount can be obtained from one animal. A three-minute walk from Takamibaba Station on the municipal tram.

My sinful indulgence while still living in Kagoshima. Broth was thick and sumptuous, all that bone brothy goodness just overflowing in every spoonful.

This long-established eel specialty restaurant is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Tenmonkan Street in the downtown area. The restaurant uses the eels from Osumi Peninsula, which are special even among Kagoshima’s abundance of eel farms, due to the care taken in raising them with the spring water from the Shirasu Plateau. Soaked in a secret sauce that had been handed down for around 80 years, the restaurant’s prized eels are grilled over a charcoal fire. Popular menu items include the “Unadon” and “Unaju,” which are bursting with the delicious taste of the eels. A square of colored paper on which the children’s author, Hatoju Muku wrote “Sueyoshi has the best eel in Japan” is displayed here.

At Tenmonkan street, where we found Favori bakery, 100¥ shop, Kagoshima speciality shop and chanced upon this unagi eel shop. It was packed withlocal tourists. The young lady serving us introduced...

A pork shabu-shabu restaurant. The establishment makes use of Berkshire pork raised on Kagoshima and fed copious amounts of sweet potatoes. After cooking the thin slices of meat in boiling broth, you can dip them is a light and tasty soba noodle-style tsuyu sauce made with an abundance of dashi bonito stock. Customers can also order free, unlimited servings of chopped Welsh onions and yuzu pepper made with local ingredients. At the end of the meal, you can order high quality sarashina soba noodles made with carefully ground buckwheat flour. The restaurant’s menu also includes a la carte selections like tontoro fatty pork; tonkatsu breaded pork cutlets; nikomi stewed dishes; and satsuma-age deep fried fish paste, a local specialty.

Stumbled across this place as close to the Shinksnsen station. Got the shabu pork set, and not only did the meat taste heavenly, all the side dishes were superb too! Service was excellent too

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture's most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
