Located in 2-chome, Obiya-machi, Kochi City, Hirome Market is a large food market containing food stalls and other small shops. The large number of food stalls includes places offering local Tosa dishes, as well as a wide range of other cuisine including standard Japanese food, Chinese food, Italian food, Indian food, etc. Diners order their food from the food stalls and then take it to eat in the shared central dining area. There are also shops selling local souvenirs, massage providers, etc., making this a great place for shopping or relaxation. The walkways and eating areas within the Market have been given the names of famous spots in Kochi Prefecture, such as Ryoma Street, O-Joka Square (Castle Town Square), Igosso Lane, etc.

After visiting the Kochi Castle we stopped by the Hirome-Ichiba Market and found a small noodle stand that we think is run by a husband/wife duo. No tables, just an "L" shaped counter that circles...

This souvenir shop is on the bank of the Shimanto River in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture and contains a restaurant on the second floor. It opened in 1967. The first floor sells processed goods such as natural eel, shrimp, sweetfish, and seaweed from the Shimanto River, which is said to be Japan’s last remaining limpid river. The chef, who is also a river fisherman, offers dishes such as grilled eel and rice, natural salt-grilled sweetfish, fried river shrimp, and other local cuisine. Depending on the season, you may be able to sit outside on the terrace and gaze at the river while you eat.

I came here to try their wild eel. It was okay, the meat of wild eel is leaner than those of farmed eel. The wild eel came at a price JPY3,980 but it was worth a try nonetheless.

Myojin Suisan Group’s “straw grilled kastuo-tataki, seared bonito” specialty store is located in Hirome Ichiba-market, in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. It is a popular store famous for its “fisherman caught, fisherman cooked” catch copy and on holidays, there is a queue as soon as the store opens. “Straw grilled tataki,” the signature menu using rod and line fished bonito, is a delicious dish of freshly grilled thick bonito steaks seasoned with salt or dipped in sauce. Visitors can enjoy the freshness, the volume and the fragrant scent of the dish that can only be experienced at this specialty store located in the home of bonito fishing. Also, dishes such as harambo-marbled bonito, Shimizu mackerel sashimi, and set menus are offered.

Whenever we go we always try local fav food. From what we read, this Warayakitataki Myojimmaru or 明神丸 restaurant is the best. We 4 of us ordered sets with Bonito Sashimi and chickens and two bottles...

Youll pay more here for the Katsuo no Tataki (Kochis signature dish) than at Hirome market, but its worth it for the depth of flavor. Also nice if you dont like noise/crowds. I think I remember...

A three-minute walk from tram stops Harimayabashi Station. A restaurant for enjoying “good, fresh local cuisine and good sake.” Look for the tasteful store sign. Inside, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere, with private rooms, counter seating and table seating. Enjoy special Kochi cuisine—with its wellspring of great ingredients, like bonito, moray eel, and whale—a la carte, or try rice bowls and meals-of-the-day made with local Kochi rice for lunch, or try course meals for dinner. There is a full lineup of alcohol too, like nihonshu and shochu, to go with your meal.

30 meters from Chiyoricho-1-chome Station, this confectioner has been dealing in traditional Kochi sweets since 1688. A simple dried confection, kenpi is a traditional sweet inspired by bran and the shirakami-somen given by a purveyor of the Yamauchi clan lord. Also, traditional pickled plums, and new brands of sweets reminiscent of Sakamoto Ryoma and Yamauchi Kazutoyo (who have connections to Tosa), would make great gifts or souvenirs. Other popular items include “Tosa sweet” —a bouchee made with Tosa ingredients—and goat-milk pudding, made with lots of goat milk.

The largest of Shikoku's prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island's most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities.
