Located in 2-chome, Obiya-machi, Kochi City, Hirome Market is a large food market containing food stalls and other small shops. The large number of food stalls includes places offering local Tosa dishes, as well as a wide range of other cuisine including standard Japanese food, Chinese food, Italian food, Indian food, etc. Diners order their food from the food stalls and then take it to eat in the shared central dining area. There are also shops selling local souvenirs, massage providers, etc., making this a great place for shopping or relaxation. The walkways and eating areas within the Market have been given the names of famous spots in Kochi Prefecture, such as Ryoma Street, O-Joka Square (Castle Town Square), Igosso Lane, etc.

The quality of food is unbelievable, so fresh and well made, sit with a group and make some new friends in this lovely communal setting. Do keep an eye out for the flags because it can be easy to...

This restaurant specializing in gyoza (pot stickers) is located inside the Hirome Market of “yatai” (food stand) village, food court in Obiya-machi 2-Chome, Kochi City. It is known as the originator of Yatai Gyoza, a Kochi delicacy. These pot stickers feature a thin wrapper stuffed with a filling made with plenty of vegetables including garlic chives and ginger from Kochi Prefecture and fried until golden. In addition to a la carte pot stickers, the restaurant also offers sets that pair their pot stickers with draft beer or sour cocktails.

I was looking for a small snack, not a big lunch. This place had gyoza plus a draft beer for 850-yen. What a deal. The gyoza was the best I’ve tasted in a long while. You place your order, pay...

This eel shop offers eel caught and charcoal-cooked to order. It's popular for the high quality of its rice, which is koshihikari grown in Kochi's Hamakaida by contracted farms, and their eel brought directly from Miyazaki Prefecture's Nakamura eel farm. It is very popular, so we recommend reservations.

This izakaya (Japanese-style pub) is located in Nakamura Shinmachi 1-Chome, Shimanto City. It offers a diverse menu featuring regional cuisine made with freshwater shrimp and other ingredients from the Shimanto River, seafood including skipjack tuna, moray eel, and whale, dishes featuring Shimantodori chicken, and more. One of the pub’s appeals is its elaborate interior, which features theater-inspired fan-shaped counters on the first-floor and seats on the second-floor in which you can get a view of the kitchen on the first-floor through the atrium and the dishes are served from the first-floor using a pulley system.

This was the best meal we had at any restaurant in Japan for three weeks. On a recommendation from the hosts of our accommodation we went to Chika and were absolutely thrilled. We tried their...

This souvenir shop is on the bank of the Shimanto River in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture and contains a restaurant on the second floor. It opened in 1967. The first floor sells processed goods such as natural eel, shrimp, sweetfish, and seaweed from the Shimanto River, which is said to be Japan’s last remaining limpid river. The chef, who is also a river fisherman, offers dishes such as grilled eel and rice, natural salt-grilled sweetfish, fried river shrimp, and other local cuisine. Depending on the season, you may be able to sit outside on the terrace and gaze at the river while you eat.

Luckily I could have limited available chacoal grilled “Tennen” eel (not farmed eel) which is cooked as Kansai style, however, a bit over cooked but still very tasty. Restaurant located on 2F with...

This restaurant is inside the Drive-In Katsuobune tourist stop located on the side of the Kuroshio Line in Niida, Kochi City. It is popular for allowing visitors to sear freshly-caught raw skipjack tuna themselves with burning straw. In addition to freshly-seared skipjack tuna, the restaurant also offers a la carte items, set meals, and takeout.

A three-minute walk from tram stops Harimayabashi Station. A restaurant for enjoying “good, fresh local cuisine and good sake.” Look for the tasteful store sign. Inside, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere, with private rooms, counter seating and table seating. Enjoy special Kochi cuisine—with its wellspring of great ingredients, like bonito, moray eel, and whale—a la carte, or try rice bowls and meals-of-the-day made with local Kochi rice for lunch, or try course meals for dinner. There is a full lineup of alcohol too, like nihonshu and shochu, to go with your meal.

The Tanaka Sengyoten is located in the Taisho-machi market, which sells fresh fish and seafood. Tanaka Sengyoten also has a Ryoshi-goya (fisherman’s hut) opposite the shop; customers who have purchased fresh fish at Tanaka Sengyoten can take it next door and have it prepared and cooked for them to eat there. There is no extra charge for sashimi etc., but there is an additional charge for cooking dried fish. Customers can also order miso soup and rice to accompany their fish or seafood.

Tanaka Sengyoten used very fresh fish from local fishermen. There is a rice set with miso soup for 250 yen. You can chose your fish from the shop across the street.

Kochi Areas

around-area-map

The largest of Shikoku's prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island's most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you're a pilgrim or not, Kochi's 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
