This is a local cuisine restaurant in front of JR Aomori Station, where one can try fresh seafood including scallops of Mutsu Bay. “Kenoshiru Ramen” is a blend of local Aomori “kenoshiru” cuisine with a miso-based ramen. Aomori's signature “Hotate Kaiyaki Miso” (scallop baked in its shell with miso) and “Hotate Fry” (fried scallop) set meals are popular with tourists who come to taste the deftly-prepared scallops which are neither frozen or boiled. In the interior wafts the atmosphere of an old-fashioned eatery, which is even easy to drop in by unaccompanied.

The best eal I ate in Japan. Cozy local place to eat local scallops fried on butter or scallop sashimi.

This Western-style building standing in Fujita Memorial Garden was built as a villa for businessman Ken’ichi Fujita in 1921. The Taisho Roman Tea Room is a café operating out of the building’s spacious sunroom. Some of the café’s most popular menu items are its six varieties of apple pies, all of which are also offered at popular Western confectionaries in Hirosaki City. The café also offers drink sets with its pies and you can take your time to eat, compare, and find your favorite. Take a moment and relax while gazing out at the garden’s trees from the café’s windows.

After reading about the apple cakes we thought we would try some. The surroundings are lovely and we managed to get a table overlooking the park which was a bonus. The apple cakes were lovely.

A conveyor belt sushi restaurant located in the Hasshoku Center market where some 60 sellers stand side by side in the city of Hachinohe. The restaurant takes great pride in serving stunningly fresh sushi made with seafood offered at the market brought in from Hachinohe Port and the surrounding seas. Making maximum use of its prime location in the market, many of the restaurant’s menu items are sold at very reasonable prices. Particularly recommended are the ika-zanmai, saba-zanmai, and aburi-zanmai sets, which let you eat and compare different varieties of squid, mackerel, and aburi-zushi broiled sushi, respectively. Order one and enjoy three different flavors on one plate!

A bit pricier than my usual sushi spots, but certainly fresher as well. An English menu is available, and the belt was fully stocked when I went mid-afternoon. The total adds up pretty quickly when...

This gelato is hand-made each day from the rich milk of the Jersey cows reared freely and milked each morning on the shop’s farm. Seasonal fruit and vegetable flavors are particularly popular. The shop only uses its own home-grown fresh vegetables and local produce and offers limited availability and seasonal menus. Limited availability items may become unavailable once they have sold out so if you find a flavor you like, you had better go for it! It is around 17 minutes by car from Kamikitacho Station on the Aoimori Railway.

Thye always have interesting seasonal flavors, and my kids think it’s neat to play on the tractors out front.

A sushi restaurant established in 1964. Located a five-minute drive from Cape Oma, the northernmost point of the main Japanese island of Honshu, this popular establishment uses choice tuna weighing over 100 kilograms, considered the highest class of tuna. In addition to standards such as magurodon tuna rice bowls and tuna nigiri sushi assortments, with an advance reservation customers can enjoy the restaurant's tuna course meal. The famous establishment is a great destination for tuna-lovers, and depending on the time of year, the restaurant may also serve tuna from the waters off the coast of Aomori Prefecture. Note that as the restaurant closes irregularly, prospective customers should be sure to contact the establishment before going.

Anzu is a restaurant where customers can listen to impressive live performances of Tsugaru shamisen (a traditional stringed instrument) while dining on fresh food from both the sea and land. Live performances are held twice a day for 30 minutes at 7p.m. and 9p.m. Since the musicians perform without a microphone, customers say that the realisticfeeling is somewhat different from that of a typical live show using a microphone. The interior, decorated with kites and paper goldfish lanterns, is centered on an open hearth, and in the winter, it is possible to charcoal broil shellfish, such as scallops, spear squids, and red king crab.

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
