The Aomori Gyosai Center in Furukawa Market is a famous seafood market for “Nokkedon.” Visitors can purchase tickets at the information desk, choose ingredients from about 30 shops in the hall, and have them placed on a bowl of rice. Besides sashimi, there is also miso soup, pickles, prepared dishes and meat as well. It is fun to walk freely around the market choosing the ingredients to top you own bowl of rice. It is approximately a five minute walk from JR Aomori station.

You buy a set of tickets and walk around the market exchanging them for the fresh seafood you want. For a person like me who wants to sample a bit of everything, this is perfect! The seafood was all...

    Aomori Pref. Hirosakishi Noda 1-3-16
This Western-style confectioner is located beside Kita-oh-dori Avenue along the east side of Hirosaki Castle. The showcase on the first floor exudes a bright feeling with white as a motif. In contrast, the second floor has an eat-in space, featuring a chic, grown-up atmosphere colored in black. Popular products include the apple pie, as one might expect from Aomori Prefecture—an apple paradise. The taste is great, and the volume has it hanging over the plate, so it’s known as a place where you get a good deal for the price.

Angelique provides quality for money, no doubt. The cakes and pastries not only look very good, the taste very good! The Mont Blanc is a must! A true French experience in Hirosaki. Yet, the place...

The Taisho Roman Tea Room is a café operating out of the building’s spacious sunroom. Some of the café’s most popular menu items are its six varieties of apple pies, all of which are also offered at popular Western confectionaries in Hirosaki City. The café also offers drink sets with its pies and you can take your time to eat, compare, and find your favorite. Take a moment and relax while gazing out at the garden’s trees from the café’s windows.

This is a local cuisine restaurant in front of JR Aomori Station, where one can try fresh seafood including scallops of Mutsu Bay. “Kenoshiru Ramen” is a blend of local Aomori “kenoshiru” cuisine with a miso-based ramen. Aomori's signature “Hotate Kaiyaki Miso” (scallop baked in its shell with miso) and “Hotate Fry” (fried scallop) set meals are popular with tourists who come to taste the deftly-prepared scallops which are neither frozen or boiled. In the interior wafts the atmosphere of an old-fashioned eatery, which is even easy to drop in by unaccompanied.

A sushi restaurant established in 1964. Located a five-minute drive from Cape Oma, the northernmost point of the main Japanese island of Honshu, this popular establishment uses choice tuna weighing over 100 kilograms, considered the highest class of tuna. In addition to standards such as magurodon tuna rice bowls and tuna nigiri sushi assortments, with an advance reservation customers can enjoy the restaurant's tuna course meal. The famous establishment is a great destination for tuna-lovers, and depending on the time of year, the restaurant may also serve tuna from the waters off the coast of Aomori Prefecture. This is a minshuku lodging in Omataira, Oma, Oma Town, ShimokitaCounty. This lodging offers seasonal seafood cuisine, like local Oma tuna (January through August is not local), raw sea urchin, and angelfish hot pot. The lodging operates a lunch diner from mid-April through October.

This gelato is hand-made each day from the rich milk of the Jersey cows reared freely and milked each morning on the shop’s farm. Seasonal fruit and vegetable flavors are particularly popular. The shop only uses its own home-grown fresh vegetables and local produce and offers limited availability and seasonal menus. Limited availability items may become unavailable once they have sold out so if you find a flavor you like, you had better go for it! It is around 17 minutes by car from Kamikitacho Station on the Aoimori Railway.

Thye always have interesting seasonal flavors, and my kids think it’s neat to play on the tractors out front.

This cafe is famous for its Alain Delon curry, which has a hamburger steak placed on top of a tower of rice. The hamburger steak that goes perfectly with the curry is coated in a crisp breading, and melted cheese oozes out of it when you insert your knife. In addition to the Alain Delon curry, the Japanese-style Alain Delon doria and gratin are also highly recommended.

You can enjoy dining in a shop with a refined exterior inspired by the color white and a spotlessly clean interior that would rival any jeweler. The sweets, refined through years of practice, are as cute as anything, and the cakes are known to delight both the eyes and the mouth.

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori's fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
