This is a local cuisine restaurant in front of JR Aomori Station, where one can try fresh seafood including scallops of Mutsu Bay. “Kenoshiru Ramen” is a blend of local Aomori “kenoshiru” cuisine with a miso-based ramen. Aomori's signature “Hotate Kaiyaki Miso” (scallop baked in its shell with miso) and “Hotate Fry” (fried scallop) set meals are popular with tourists who come to taste the deftly-prepared scallops which are neither frozen or boiled. In the interior wafts the atmosphere of an old-fashioned eatery, which is even easy to drop in by unaccompanied.

This reminds me of mom’s cooking restaurant. The restaurant is small but cosy. We chanced upon this restaurant during our 3 day stay at Aomori near the station. Only discovered how famous it is after...

The bright, modern shop Suzume no Oyado (Sparrow Inn) does not offer a fixed menu, but provides meals according to the produce of the day and price. During the day, the menu is made of names such as “lunch meal” and “lunch meeting,” and guests can feel the four seasons of Tsugaru through the delicate cuisine. The first floor consists of table seats, counter seats, and floor seating around a sunken hearth, and on the second floor are three small private rooms designed as traditional Japanese houses. It is a three minute walk from Chuo-Hirosaki Station on the Konan Railway Owani Line.

Located on the shore of Lake Towada, this Japanese diner serves regional dishes made with kokanee landlocked salmon from the lake, noodle dishes, rice bowls, the restaurant's own apple pie, and more. Emphasizing freshness in its kokanee, the restaurant's kokanee sashimi, made with fish caught that day, is wonderfully taste. Depending on the day's catch, the restaurant may run out of stock early.

Anzu is a restaurant where customers can listen to impressive live performances of Tsugaru shamisen (a traditional stringed instrument) while dining on fresh food from both the sea and land. Live performances are held twice a day for 30 minutes at 7p.m. and 9p.m. Since the musicians perform without a microphone, customers say that the realisticfeeling is somewhat different from that of a typical live show using a microphone. The interior, decorated with kites and paper goldfish lanterns, is centered on an open hearth, and in the winter, it is possible to charcoal broil shellfish, such as scallops, spear squids, and red king crab.

Aomori Main Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori's fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
