This is a yomogi mochi rice cake specialty shop located on Sanjo-dori Street in Hashimoto Town, Nara City. The yomogi mochi is made from carefully selected locally grown produce. Hot rice is pounded swiftly according to traditional methods to make the soft and springy texture of the sweet. The shop is visited by many customers who come to see the skilled combination of the craftsmen turning and pounding the rice first hand.

I was skeptical at first - Ive had many a mochi in my lifetime and Ive never been fond of bean paste - but after seeing *that* viral video, I reluctantly decided to try Nakatanidou at least once...

This is a Japanese confectionary store in the Yume-Kaze Plaza in front of the gate of the Todai-ji Temple in Kasugano Town, Nara City. The store makes sweets from locally grown ingredients such as Japanese Yamato-imo yam and Yoshino-kuzu arrowroot. A popular item is the Japanese hotcake sweet bean paste sandwich called Yamato sanzan dorayaki. They are made freshly daily with red beans, and flour and eggs from a Tokachi farm. There is also a cafe on the second floor where customers can enjoy sweets and Miwa Somen noodles.

I was looking for something sweet on my way out from Nara Park, and this shop looked really nice! I bought a small strawberry daifuku and a matcha cake with white chocolate cream filling. Let me tell...

A kudzu jelly specialty restaurant founded in 1870 housed inside a black-painted building standing on the former site of the Todaiji temple’s west gate. Here you can taste the unique dishes and sweets of a long-standing restaurant which uses pure Yoshino-honkuzu powder, a Nara specialty product. The restaurant’s jiggling, chewy kuzu-mochi and kuzu-kiri jelly cakes are lovingly prepared to order. The restaurant also offers a full menu of savory dishes made with delicious Yoshino-honkuzu powder, including kudzu udon noodles and kudzu rice porridge. Popular with tourists seeking lunch or a place to take a break, inside, the restaurant is quiet, and its windows look out over seasonal scenery. Closest station: Kintetsu-Nara Station.

We was looking for some local food and found this kudzu eatery. There was 2 floors, and we chose the upper. There was English menu. We decided to ordered 1 set and ala carte to share among us. There...

A shaved ice and tea specialty shop located a seven minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station. This popular shop is visited by a great many people even in winter. The shop uses pure Nara ice slowly frozen over a period of three days for its shaved ice treats. The milk, honey, matcha green tea powder, and other ingredients used by the shop are also primarily from Nara. The shop’s signature espuma shaved ice is made with thinly shaved ice topped with mousse-like espuma syrup. Fluffy and light, many customers come from far and wide to experience this sweet and its unique texture. Only 200 are served each day.

Unfortunately, I did not like the kakigori here as it was too sour for me. I chose the one which changes color after you pour the syrup in. It was so sour I couldt finish it. However, the cafe was a...

This dumpling shop founded in 1878 is known for its tasty kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour), each of which is carefully made the old fashioned way and served on a bamboo skewer. Guests can enjoy their dumplings inside the shop's bright Japanese-style interior. Although the shop officially closes at 5:00 p.m., we recommend going earlier in the day as it sometimes sells out and closes early.

An Italian restaurant located a four minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station which serves dishes lovingly prepared from select Nara ingredients including traditional Yamato vegetables, Yamato pork, and Yamato beef. In spite of Nara’s lack of access to the ocean, the restaurant is also renowned for its fresh seafood shipped direct from Tosashimizu. The restaurant has a stylish interior and relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy for both couples an groups to enjoy themselves. In addition to a la carte dishes such as chewy oven-baked pizza and authentic pastas, the restaurant also offers a full menu of reasonably-priced lunch choices.

Good pasta and pizza, service was very good on a busy night. We had no problems communicating to them in English. They coped with allergies very well. We enjoyed our meal!

This confectionary makes and sells sweet dumplings, a specialty of the Yamato province. Just like the flagship location, this Yagi location adjacent to Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station closes as soon as it sells out. Served on bamboo skewers, their kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour) are made from just three ingredients; rice flour made from high-quality new rice ground the old fashioned way in a mortar, high quality kinako (roasted soy flour), and a special syrup said to have been created by Shogoro the First after many pained efforts.

A restaurant and hideaway located in the Naramachi (Town of Nara) area, renowned for its charming old-fashioned townscape, a 15 minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. Situated inside a townhome over 140 years old, the restaurant is divided into multiple rooms, including one with a view of the inner garden, a traditional kura warehouse section, and a tatami room on the second floor. Awa serves dishes which gives diners the chance to enjoy the food culture of Nara, including home-grown Yamato vegetables, Yamato beef, and local Yamato sake. Its lunches consisting of numerous small dishes piled high on a basket are so beautiful they look like works of art. Visitors also love the fact that Awa’s dishes are not restricted to the traditional boundaries of Japanese cuisine, such as the restaurant’s rib roast steak served grilled on a porcelain plate. Advance reservation required.

We went here by chance and we have to say it was just amazing! The staff is super friendly and the food experience is just amazing! We recommend it!!

A long-standing persimmon leaf sushi restaurant located a 10 minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station which was founded in 1861. Persimmon leaf sushi is fatty mackerel served on a bed of vinegared rice and wrapped in a persimmon leaf, which has an invigorating fragrance. In addition to persimmon leaf sushi, Hiraso also serves chagayu tea gruel, a traditional priest’s meal, as well as seasonal local cuisine made with an abundance of Nara ingredients. The nearby Sarusawa Pond, considered one of top eight sights of Nara, reflects the Kohfukuji Temple’s five-tier pagoda; this lovely scene attracts many tourists who also like to stop by Hiraso for lunch. This long-standing confectioner, just a one-minute walk from Taimadera Station, is where they make and sell famous local specialty Chujo-Mochi. Chujo-Mochi is an unsophisticated Japanese confection that uses the native wild-growing mugwort of the Katsuragi area in the mochi which is then wrapped around elegant sweet smooth red-bean paste. Enjoy the traditional flavors of their Chujo-Mochi and sencha green tea set or red bean soup with kusamochi (rice flour dumpling) as you relax in the peaceful interior of the shop. The front has a wide variety of products packed for take away with everything from two-piece to 48-piece box sets.

First opened in 1999, this restaurant is divided up into three areas, the Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) Area, where guests can take their time to enjoy a meal, the Hitsuji (Sheep) Area, where you can meet and pet animals in a natural setting, and the Yamagoya (Mountain Hut) Area, a gallery used to host various exhibits and events. In the Sakura Area, course meals are available for both lunch and dinner. Their special vegetable dishes only available on nights with full moons are also popular. The Hitsuji Area offers special plates, soup sets, and more.

This ramen shop popular for its incredibly savory chicken bone broth is also a hit with young mothers and fathers due to its family-friendly atmosphere. In addition to their torisoba (chicken broth ramen noodles), which has broth so tasty you'll want to drink it to the last drop, we also recommend their chashu-don (braised pork belly rice bowl), which is topped with a generous portion of braised pork slices.

Gen is a soba noodle restaurant located in Fukuchiin Town, Nara City. At lunchtime you can try their fragrant Juwari-soba (100% buckwheat flour), although they only make 40 bowls of this soul satisfying soba each day. You’ll need to book a table for the evening and it’s only available for just two groups. A course of soba noodles is served for guests lucky enough to get a table. This Michelin starred restaurant is particularly well known.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture's treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains' Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
