This is a Japanese confectionary store in the Yume-Kaze Plaza in front of the gate of the Todai-ji Temple in Kasugano Town, Nara City. The store makes sweets from locally grown ingredients such as Japanese Yamato-imo yam and Yoshino-kuzu arrowroot. A popular item is the Japanese hotcake sweet bean paste sandwich called Yamato sanzan dorayaki. They are made freshly daily with red beans, and flour and eggs from a Tokachi farm. There is also a cafe on the second floor where customers can enjoy sweets and Miwa Somen noodles.

I was looking for something sweet on my way out from Nara Park, and this shop looked really nice! I bought a small strawberry daifuku and a matcha cake with white chocolate cream filling. Let me tell...

This is a yomogi mochi rice cake specialty shop located on Sanjo-dori Street in Hashimoto Town, Nara City. The yomogi mochi is made from carefully selected locally grown produce. Hot rice is pounded swiftly according to traditional methods to make the soft and springy texture of the sweet. The shop is visited by many customers who come to see the skilled combination of the craftsmen turning and pounding the rice first hand.

I was skeptical at first - Ive had many a mochi in my lifetime and Ive never been fond of bean paste - but after seeing *that* viral video, I reluctantly decided to try Nakatanidou at least once...

This confectionary makes each and every one of their puddings by hand using generous amounts of ingredients sourced locally from Nara. The puddings, which come in glass jars, are popular for the cute designs of their lids. Their various seasonal puddings, such as mahoroba (splendid place) Daibutsu pudding rolls, and their soft-serve ice cream made with Daibutsu pudding are also quite popular.

This pudding shop is situated on Narayama-odori Street in Narazaka-cho, Nara City. The shop's signature Mahoroba Daibutsu Pudding is made with simple ingredients: an abundance of high-quality fresh cream, milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla beans. In addition to standard custard flavor, the shop also sells a variety of other flavors, including Yamato tea, a local Nara specialty product; cheesecake; chocolate; and Harushika, a local Nara sake. Other products include the Shiroi Shika no Purin pudding, and the Daibutsu-sama no Hohoemi Cookie.

The building looks really cute! You can eat various kinds of sweets, mainly Daibutsu puddings. These are little bit expensive, ( around 400yen for small size, and 900yen for big size) but meltingly...

This dumpling shop founded in 1878 is known for its tasty kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour), each of which is carefully made the old fashioned way and served on a bamboo skewer. Guests can enjoy their dumplings inside the shop's bright Japanese-style interior. Although the shop officially closes at 5:00 p.m., we recommend going earlier in the day as it sometimes sells out and closes early.

This small shop is very popular among local people with Dango (skewered small rice balls (paste) with soy beans powder. It might look very simple. But you will be very surprised with its very good...

This ramen shop popular for its incredibly savory chicken bone broth is also a hit with young mothers and fathers due to its family-friendly atmosphere. In addition to their torisoba (chicken broth ramen noodles), which has broth so tasty you'll want to drink it to the last drop, we also recommend their chashu-don (braised pork belly rice bowl), which is topped with a generous portion of braised pork slices.

A kama-meshi (rice, meat and vegetable dish served in a small pot) specialty restaurant located near Nara Park and the Nara National Museum in Noborioji Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture know for the constant line outside its door. Each serving of kama-meshi is cooked to order over an open fire. The harmony between the hearty portion of toppings, dashi-steeped rice, and toasty okoge is exquisite. The most popular item on the menu is the Nara seven variety kama-meshi, which has seven toppings, including shrimp, crab, and conger eel. This long-standing confectioner, just a one-minute walk from Taimadera Station, is where they make and sell famous local specialty Chujo-Mochi. Chujo-Mochi is an unsophisticated Japanese confection that uses the native wild-growing mugwort of the Katsuragi area in the mochi which is then wrapped around elegant sweet smooth red-bean paste. Enjoy the traditional flavors of their Chujo-Mochi and sencha green tea set or red bean soup with kusamochi (rice flour dumpling) as you relax in the peaceful interior of the shop. The front has a wide variety of products packed for take away with everything from two-piece to 48-piece box sets.

This confectionary makes and sells sweet dumplings, a specialty of the Yamato province. Just like the flagship location, this Yagi location adjacent to Kintetsu Yamato-Yagi Station closes as soon as it sells out. Served on bamboo skewers, their kinako dango (sweet dumplings sprinkled with roasted soy flour) are made from just three ingredients; rice flour made from high-quality new rice ground the old fashioned way in a mortar, high quality kinako (roasted soy flour), and a special syrup said to have been created by Shogoro the First after many pained efforts.

This somen noodle restaurant located in Shiba, Sakurai City, Nara Prefecture is operated by longstanding Miwa somen shop “Ikeri.” The shop has a pure Japanese aura with an elegant ambience and contains large windows with tables seating. The flagship dish, “hiyashi somen,” features a smooth and refreshing flavor that goes down well. There’s also local Nara cuisine with a focus on “nyumen” (somen noodles and various ingredients in a soy sauce broth), as well as other seasonal dishes. One popular option is the “senjutei afternoon meal,” which includes nyumen, Nara delicacies, and persimmon leaf sushi.

This restaurant is popular for its black rice black curry, a minor local delicacy in Nara. Its fried pork loin cutlets, made with locally-raised Yamato pork and flavored with their homemade shio koji (a Japanese seasoning made by fermenting koji mold with salt and rice), are also popular. Their curry made with black rice and Yamato pork, two of Nara's specialties, is so popular that it often sells out. Other offerings include fried oysters, a winter exclusive, as well as their healthy black rice lunches, which come with four sides, soup, and a salad.

We had been strolling around Naramachi and saw the food menu for this restaurant. We liked what we saw and went in. I had a port cutlet and salad set menu. Black rice was on the side. Surprisingly...

A café situated inside an old Japanese-style home in the Naramachi (Town of Nara) area centering on the former grounds of the Gango-ji Temple. The remodeled home still retains its old latticed and frosted glass windows, giving the café an old-fashioned yet somehow familiar atmosphere. The café’s signature menu item is the Kanakana-gohan, which comes with a variety of healthy Japanese side dishes, rice, and miso soup. The café’s full menu also includes cakes, pudding, and carefully selected beverages. Closest station: Kintetsu-Nara Station.

Best cafe in Nara for sure. Probably best cafe in Japan and even in all Asia. *Maybe even the vest cafe in the world. Trust me. GO.

This restaurant is famous for serving Japan's biggest tonkatsu (fried pork cutlets), but they're about more than just size. Each of their side dishes is prepared with care by an experienced chef using only the freshest ingredients. Besides their tonkatsu, their wild-caught head-on shrimp, wakadori katsu (fried spring chicken cutlets), and fried oysters (depending on the season) are all served in generous portions.

12 souvenir shops and restaurants operate inside this complex located in the center of Nara Park. In addition to more conventional souvenirs, visitors can also find Daibutsu Pudding, which exploded in popularity after it was featured on television, as well as traditional “Yamato” vegetables and fruits stocked from nearby farmers. Yume-Kaze Plaza is also home to several restaurants, including a casual Italian restaurant perfect for lunch as well as a venerable establishment favored for its kudzu sweets and meals made with local Nara ingredients. The natural scenery, including a commanding view of Mt. Wakakusa, Mt. Mikasa, and Mt. Tamuke, is spectacular, and the facility is visited by many tourists and students on school outings.

This is the square close to Todaiji temple where there are a number of pretty good quality restaurants for a proper meal. I had lunch at one of the restaurants here before heading to Todaiji.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture's treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains' Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
