    A café situated inside a remodeled old Japanese home in Kidera Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. The café is snug and old-fashioned; its townhome architecture is appropriately Nara-esque. A popular spot to enjoy a lunch or take a break in between a walk, Yotsuba has window-side counter seating as well as tatami mat seating where you can take your time with your meal. The café’s chicken, special curry with brown rice, sandwiches, daily special cakes, and other menu items are handmade with a focus on simplicity and are well-reviewed.

    A soba noodle restaurant located near Ishibutai Tomb, a popular sightseeing destination, in Asuka Village, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture on the second floor of the Asuka-no-yume-ichi shopping facility. Inside, tables and chairs made from thinned timber from the forests of Asuka stand side by side; smelling faintly of wood with light pouring in through the windows, the restaurant has a comfortable atmosphere. The set meals, made with an abundance of Nara ingredients like ancient rice varieties and local vegetables, are well-reviewed. A warming Asuka nabe hotpot set is also served in winter. The first floor of the facility is a souvenir shop selling local Asuka specialties and handmade knickknacks.

    This café in Asuka Village, Takaichi County, Nara, is situated across the street from the Asuka Village Office. Located in a remodeled classical styled house that exudes the taste of the former capital the shop has large windows and a relaxed atmosphere. In the rear garden you can sit on the terrace and look over Amakashi no oka hill and the site of the former Asuka Itabuki-no-miya palace. Carefully selected beans are roasted in house and the resulting hand dripped coffee is distinguished by its strong aroma and refreshing aftertaste. Along with their café menu they have a popular food menu with dishes such as Hainanese chicken rice.

    An Italian restaurant located a four minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station which serves dishes lovingly prepared from select Nara ingredients including traditional Yamato vegetables, Yamato pork, and Yamato beef. In spite of Nara’s lack of access to the ocean, the restaurant is also renowned for its fresh seafood shipped direct from Tosashimizu. The restaurant has a stylish interior and relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy for both couples an groups to enjoy themselves. In addition to a la carte dishes such as chewy oven-baked pizza and authentic pastas, the restaurant also offers a full menu of reasonably-priced lunch choices.

    Good pasta and pizza, service was very good on a busy night. We had no problems communicating to them in English. They coped with allergies very well. We enjoyed our meal!

The shop’s feature product, the persimmon-leaf sushi, is a Yoshino specialty in which local Nara grown rice and fatty mackerel are wrapped in a persimmon leaf.     You’ll find this coffee shop inside the “Nara Orient” townhouse, built at the end of the Edo period in the “Naramachi” area of Nishinoshinya Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. The most popular dish is the “chagayu (tea porridge) meal” made with roasted green tea or azuki bean tea. There are many other unique local items as well, such as side dishes made with locally grown vegetables and desserts. The Japanese courtyard inside gives the place a traditional feel. The original sweets are popular too, such as the specially made “shiratama ice cream” and “warabimochi” (bracken-starch dumplings).

    大人の日帰り旅関西版と言う雑誌に紹介されていたので、訪問。元々米問屋だった建物を 活用して飲食店に。奥には蔵を活用したバーも夜は開店するとの話しでした。茶がゆを頂きました。1500円で数十円お釣り来ましたが、話のタネで次はリピート無いですね。特に旨いと言う訳でも無く、高いですね。

    This is a famous restaurant where one can enjoy the feel and beauty of the architecture in an old Japanese home while eating carefully prepared kaiseki (course) cuisine. It is located in Asuka Town, Takaicihi County, Nara Prefecture. The ingredients and flavorings are all carefully selected from across the country. They take special care with water and fire, using water coming from natural rocky sources and binchotan high-grade charcoal. Popular options include the Katte Shojin Course centered around vegetables and made with bonito dashi soup stock, and the Ofuku bento lunchbox limited to orders of at least 10. They also offer side dishes including homemade goma-dofu (tofu-like food made from crushed sesame seeds and starch) and seasonal vegetable tempura. They also sell Western-style sweets like cakes and bavarois as souvenirs. Seats are by reservation only and not available to diners under 12 years old.

    This is a vegetable cuisine restaurant offering mainly Yamato vegetables, located in Nakanoshinya Town, Nara City. For lunch they offer Yasai Biyori, a set of vegetable cuisine using Yamato vegetables from a contract garden and kodaimai (wild rice), the Hidamari which comes with Yamato beef, and Hinata that comes with either char or prawn. They also offer a popular Yasai Kaiseki (vegetable course) full of vegetables from start to finish (reservations needed by the previous day). This can also be made into a set with Yamato beef, char, Yamato pork or Yamato chicken.

    This log house café is located in front of the Japanese-style inn Kato along Prefectural Route 15, in Yoshinoyama, Yoshino Town. They have a “local vegetable lunch” made with over 25 different types of organic vegetables harvested in the morning (reservation required), and a rotating daily menu called “Yoshino Teishoku,” which includes Yamato Pork cutlets and Kakinoha-sushi. They also have a dessert menu with items such as Kuzumochi and ice cream, all of which can be eaten while enjoying the views of the seasons at an altitude of 400 meters.

    This is a specialty shop for Kakinoha-zushi established for over 50 years in Yoshinoyama, Yoshino Town, located in a building over 50 years old along Prefectural Route 15. It is beside the Yoshimizu-jinja Shrine Torii, the World Heritage Site, and they sell sushi of domestic mackerel and Fukui-produced brand rice Koshihikari wrapped in Nishi-Yoshino-produced kaki leaves packed in a Yoshino cedar wood box. During cherry blossom season it is also possible to dine inside the shop.

    蔵王堂の少し上手。柿の葉寿司の専門店。 ばら売りはないので、一番小さい箱950円を買って、食べ比べ。ここの鯖は、寿司の一面をしっかり覆う大きさがあって、大将の几帳面さがよく分かります。大きさもあって、ヘビータイプの柿の葉寿司かなと思います。

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
