A long-standing anagomeshi (grilled conger eel over rice) restaurant established in 1901 located a two minute walk from Miyajimaguchi Station. The restaurant’s famed anagomeshi features fresh-grilled conger eel (anago) piled tightly packed on top of a bed of rice cooked with a broth made from conger eel bones. This long-selling favorite was originally created to offer as a bento box lunch sold in front of the nearby train station when the restaurant was founded. The restaurant is also famous for the lines of customers waiting to eat inside that constantly form out its door. Customers eating in can enjoy flavors and dishes differing from those offered for bento box lunches, such as piping hot, fresh-made anagomeshi and shirayaki conger eel grilled without seasoning. Bento box lunches can be reserved. No reservations are accepted for the restaurants sit-down space.

A popular okonomiyaki savory pancake restaurant located in Yagembori, Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture which sees lines of customers waiting outside its door day after day. The restaurant’s batter is made with high quality domestic flour and milk and without conventional dashi stock to ensure it does not obstruct the flavor of the sauce. Hassyou puts great effort into its okonomiyaki—the cabbage used is sourced from different locations depending on the season, for example, and Hiroshima noodles are used because they pick up sauce well. The most popular item on the menu, which almost all customers order, is the okonomiyaki soba niku tama—okonomiyaki with soba noodles, meat, and eggs. The restaurant’s scallops, thick-cut beef tongue, and other side dishes are also well-reviewed.

The flagship bakery of the Andersen Group was founded in 1967 along Hondori in Naka-ku in the city of Hiroshima. Due to the replacement of the Hondori building, the bakery was moved in 2016 and is currently operating in a building in Kamiya-cho. The first floor is devoted to bread baked in stone ovens, Danish pastries, and other authentic European baked goods, in addition to a delicatessen and sells things such as wine and flowers. The cafe on the second floor sells mainly sandwich menus for breakfast and freshly baked bread for lunches. I say selection because perhaps we chose the wrong things --see my pics. The number of bakery and ready made items are astonishing, though. Attached to the train station, so it was very convenient...

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
