A long-standing ice cream shop located along the Onomichi Channel in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture which was established in 1939. In addition to the ice cream sales counter, the shop also has an old-fashioned eat-in space called the Monaka Room. The shop’s signature item is the egg ice cream, the recipe for which was created around 1940s and modeled after a French-style ice cream. People love its smooth creaminess. The shop’s monaka wafer ice cream sandwiches and ice cream zenzai sweet red bean soup are also popular. This famous shop has been featured in many magazines and on numerous television shows.

Had the Ice Monaka. It was a crunchy shell with lots of ice cream inside. I liked it and was worth the 150 yen. Its not a rich ice cream so I would be able to eat a few on a warm day :) A local man...

It is a comfortable space you can relax, enjoy lattes that have an adorable cat picture on top as well as handmade desserts. For both lunches and dinners local produce is used, and the “Yamaneko Lunch”, which has the option of white rice or brown rice, is popular. It is available for parties as well.

Delicious, healthy food -- nice modest portions. Does not seat many, so you may have to wait for them to call you when your table comes available.

This is an American restaurant overlooking the view of Onomichi Channel from a large window and it is located about a one minute walk from Onomichi Station. The menu includes a variety of dishes using a large amount of food from the seas and mountains of Hiroshima, including local seafood, meats and vegetables. Ordering oyster dishes by writing the variety and how you would like them cooked on the order sheet on the table is also popular. The oysters are popular because they are purchased seasonally from domestic and foreign production areas, ensuring that fresh, raw oysters can be tasted throughout the year. The menu is extensive offering thick steak and fresh wine etc. The illuminated Onomichi Channel is beautiful at night.

This ramen shop in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture is notable for their light soy sauce-derived flavor of their secret soup. Since its founding, the restaurant exclusively used spring water from Onomichi, which has the same mineral content as that from Mt. Daisen (Tottori Prefecture), to make its soup. Known as Onomichi ramen, this style of ramen soup made with pork bones, and chicken carcasses, vegetables, kombu kelp, and other ingredients is quickly becoming a popular regional ramen.

    Hiroshima Pref. Kureshi Hondori 4-10-1
Chinraiken is a long-established restaurant built up from a lowly food stall after the war and said to be the first restaurant to serve the local Kure food, Kure-reimen (cold noodles). It’s a very popular restaurant widely frequented by tourists and local residents. During peak times there’ll often be a queue of people eagerly waiting outside. The soup together with their own special blend of sauce with the flavors of soy sauce, chili peppers, and sesame all based around a chicken broth has a perfect balance of sweetness, spiciness and sourness. The simple and rich flavor goes well with the made-to-order flat noodles and tender slices of roast pork. Try adding their original su-karashi (vinegar and mustard) seasoning, delicious! The nearest station is Kure Station.

Hiroshima Pref. Kureshi Takaramachi 4-21 Folding Marine Building 3 Building 2F
A restaurant located on the second floor of the No. 3 Orimoto Marine Building (Yamato Museum visitor parking lot) in Takara Town, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture which famously serves dishes recreating the recipes used for the former Japanese navy and the Maritime Self Defense Force. The most popular item on the menu is the teppan curry, which recreates the recipe used on the Japanese submarine Soryu and which is served on an iron tray like those used by the MSDF. The restaurant’s stylish interior is modeled after that of a submarine. A tripod machine gun used for filming a movie and a model of the battleship Yamato are displayed in the restaurant’s shop corner.

The restaurant is quite near Yamato Museum and Submarine Building. My guidebook, though, indicated that is in Yume Town so I need some time to find it)actually it was in a building next-door). As it...

Kaigun-san no Bakushukan, literally meaning Navy Beer Hall, is a restaurant run by a local beer producer located along the river about a five minute walk from Kure Station. Their Kaigun-san Beer, made from subsoil water from Mt. Haigamine and carefully selected German ingredients, is a fine craft beer which has won many awards including the International Beer Competition. The restaurant serves six different kinds of local craft beers including seasonal beers. As well as individual dishes they have an all-you-can-eat barbecue in the summer and sukiyaki in the winter. Many people like to sit out on the terrace overlooking the river. Beer is brewed on site inside the Navy Beer Hall and visitors can see the process in action from behind the glass.

    Hiroshima Onomichi-shi Tsuchido 1-12-11
This ramen restaurant is located a five-minute walk from Onomichi Station and can be identified by its blue sign. The owner is dedicated to using ingredients for which the people who made them can easily be identified, and the restaurant in turn serves bowls of safe, healthy ramen made from these ingredients. The restaurant’s staple Onomichi Ramen is topped with crisp home-grown spring onions and is made with an addictive, exquisitely balanced meat and seafood broth. This broth also goes perfectly with the restaurant’s thin noodles, which are not usually seen in Onomichi ramen. For many, Onomichi ramen equals shoyu (soy sauce) ramen, but the restaurant’s simple yet flavorful Setouchi Shio (Salt) Ramen is also popular.

    Hiroshima Pref. Higashihiroshimashi Saijouhonmachi 9-11
A Japanese and Western style restaurant located about three minutes walk from Saijo Station, directly managed by the well established sake brewery, Kamotsuru Sake Brewing. In the restaurant building built in the style of a Kyoto townhouse, guests can enjoy the dishes made with seasonal ingredients along with a glass of some of Kamotsuru’s finest sake. The restaurant interior has a relaxed feel reminiscent of the Taisho period, offering Western food on the first floor and Japanese food on the second floor. The restaurant is particularly famed for its creative cuisine only made possible by being connected with a sake brewery, such as their Hiroshima beef cheek simmered for four hours in sake and red wine, and their bishonabe (a hot pot of ingredients and sake), a dish born from the meals of brewery workers.

This well-established Western-style restaurant located about 15 minutes’ walk from Kure Station was founded in 1921. There are old-fashioned posters and autographs on the walls of this somewhat nostalgic feeling and homely restaurant. The restaurant’s specialties are the kaigun-san nikujaga (sailor’s meat and potato stew) and kaigun-san curry (sailor’s curry) flavored only with soy sauce and sugar, the recipes handed down from the first owner who himself worked as a cook in the navy. The special katsu-don with its tender beef cutlet covered in a demi-glace sauce is a popular choice.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
