A small café located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The café’s entrance is found along a narrow, stone-paved path on a hill which exudes an atmosphere from a time now past. The owner opened the café in the garden of his own home, and its soothing atmosphere makes it the perfect place to take a break in between a stroll exploring old temples in the area. Cherry blossoms in spring and fall foliage in autumn can be enjoyed from the café’s open air seating area. The café’s indoor seating is situated inside a renovated old warehouse, which also accommodated Onomichi Bunko, a book library displaying rare books such as first editions of the works of novelist Naoya Shiga. Here you can enjoy literature and beautiful rural scenery along with a handmade slice of cake, matcha green tea, or cup of coffee.

Marumen is directly managed by the okonomiyaki noodle producer and wholesaler, Isono Seimen, and is located on the second floor of their factory in Higashi Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Of the ingredients in the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, the noodles are especially good. The flavorsome noodles, crispy yet with a chewy texture, are not overcome by the flavor of the sauce. As well as their most popular dish Marumen-yaki, they have a wide range of other okonomiyaki on the menu including the deluxe okonomiyaki packed full of meat, squid, shrimp, mochi rice, squid tempura and spring onion, and teppanyaki (iron plate grilled food) from late afternoon. From the restaurant visitors can see the workings of the noodle factory’s progress. The place is popular with celebrities and players from the Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball team, with autographs of the famous people hanging on the walls of the store.

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
