A roll cake specialty shop opened by Sanso Murata, a high-class ryokan (Japanese style hotel) in Yufuin Onsen in 1999, pioneering the roll cake trend in the nation. The shop’s lightly sweet cakes pay special attention to the balance between the cake and cream, ensuring a delicate flavor that is hard to get tired of. In addition to roll cakes, the shop offers galettes and florentins to customers dining in. A five-minute walk from JR Yufuin Station.

We got the chocolate roll in small size. It was soooooo good. Not too sweet or too tough. My bf doesnt like dessert much but he seemed to be enjoy eating it!

This is a facility where one can try “jigoku mushi (literally, hell steaming),” a traditional cooking method passed down from the Edo era in which foods are steamed to degrees of up to 98°C using the hot steam from the hot spring water, and the rapid process condenses their flavor. Foodstuffs for hell steaming are available on site, or one can bring their own. Inside the facility are also exhibits on the history of Kanawa, hot springs and hell steaming, a drinking area, and free-to-use foot steamer and bath.

After reading various online articles for this place, I thought it was simply ~500 yen for 30 mins steam time and you can bring your own food. But it seems that recently theyve changed the prices...

A popular restaurant founded over 90 years ago which serves tendon tempura rice bowls covered with a secret sauce handed down by the original proprietor. The hearty tokudai tendon comes topped with two extra large shrimp and four kinds of vegetables. Diners can also enjoy sashimi made with fresh, plump seafood caught in the Bungo Channel; such Oita specialties as toriten chicken tempura, ryukyu marinated sashimi, and dangojiru dumpling soup. A 10-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

Don’t get me wrong, the food is lovely and perhaps I’m being harsh but after seeing that this place rates so highly I guess we were a little underwhelmed by the food. It’s not that I wouldn’t...

The ceiling and other pieces of the building were constructed in the late Edo period and later moved here. Filled with antique furnishings, the café is relaxing and quiet. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the four seasons from the shop’s windows. The café’s popular Mon Yufu is a sweet modeled after the snow-covered Mt. Yufu. A gyoza (jyaozi, pot sticker) specialty restaurant sitting snugly in an alley off the main strip in front of the station. The only items on the menu are fried gyoza and bottled beer. The restaurant serves 15 gyoza per serving, which can be a bit much for one person, but many eat up two dishes alone for the shop’s gyoza are not oily but bite-sized, simple treats. Only counter seating is available and a line often forms, but turnaround is quick and wait times are small. Takeout is also available. A five-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

Rokusei Cold Noodle Specialty Shop is distinctive for its strong-bodied yet tasting-good-going-down noodles. The chashu pork and kimchi ingredients are top class, and the combination of domestic beef and soup stock carefully created with thick-leafed konbu is exquisite. Aside from reimen cold noodles, they also serve unmen (a type of somen without added oil) and ramen. It is a 12-minute walk from JR Higashi Beppu Station.

A café and bar located on the grounds of the Tamanoyu, a famous hotel in the Yufuincho, Yufu City, Oita Prefecture, past a small path dappled with the sunlight filtering through a grove of trees. The establishment’s apple pie, only available in limited quantities each day, is its most popular item. These near-perfect confections offer a delicate balance of apple sourness, sweet sauce, and crisp pie crust. The café also offers anpan bread and original cakes from famous shops. It’s the perfect place to take a break during a stroll. The bright terrace facing the garden gives diners the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the season. The autumn foliage is particularly gorgeous.

Small quaint shop and has variety of donuts. Also has good coffee and nice music to sit for relaxation. We tried the chocolate donuts which is pretty good.

"This longstanding ""yoshoku"" Japanese-style Western food restaurant, a 10-minute drive from the Oita Interchange on the Higashikyushu Expressway, is one of the establishments said to have invented toriten chicken tempura, one of Oita's favorite comfort foods. Toriten is made by covering chicken with tempura batter and deep frying it, and it resembles yet is different from karaage, a style of fried chicken popular across Japan. The restaurant's toriten is crisp and juicy; try it with a splash of ponzu citrus sauce for a light, refreshing flavor. The Toriten Set meal is particularly popular and comes with rice, salad, and miso soup. The restaurant also serves other chicken dishes such as roast chicken, as well as tonkatsu breaded pork cutlets, deep fried white fish, and more. The restaurant is only open during lunchtime and is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays."

This sushi restaurant, a three-minute walk from JR Saiki station, is notable for its huge sushi toppings. Of the 12 choice sushi restaurants which are members of the Saiki Sushi Kaido promotional organization, this one is particularly famous. The toppings on the restaurant's nigiri sushi are equal in size to three or four standard pieces of sushi, and you can have them cut into easier to eat portions if you like. The Tokujo Nigiri sushi meal is particularly popular and comes with a seaweed salad topped with chutoro medium-fatty tuna and uni sea urchin. The restaurant's signature, three-centimeter-thick Trendy Tamago egg omelet sushi is made with 12 to 13 eggs, and customers are recommended to share one among several people.

This restaurant offers cuisine made freely with carefully selected foodstuffs including Bungo cows directly from Eagle Farm, Koshihikari rice from Senchomuta, and natural water from the foot of Mt. Kuenhira. The menu is complete with Bungo beef steak, beef bowls, and the well-known Toriten chicken. The limited quantity beef loin yakiniku bowl and Bungo beef leftover set menu are popular, while the Saturday and Sunday-limited blueberry sweets are also wonderful.

Since its opening in 1989, this long-established steak restaurant has enjoyed undying popularity. The carefully selected Bungo beef steaks are priced very reasonably, and the steaks are kept on the iron plate until the moment you eat them, so as not to let any of their juice be wasted. After customers finish eating their steak, rice is added to their plate to soak up the remaining juice, in the “Somuri style.” There are also à la carte menu items, including homemade ham and wine and a wide variety of alcohols to go with the steak.

Took us a few attempts to find this place but we’ll worth it. The fillet steak comes with all the trimmings...veg, rice and served in a rich peppercorn sauce. We watched the chef cooking cutting it...

This cafe stands on the Yunotsubo Kaido. Sporting a unified, finished wood and white decor inside, the bright and cheery establishment has a relaxing atmosphere. The cafe takes particular pride in its 3D latte art depicting animals and popular characters using a milk foam perfected after much trial and error by the owner, and this popular establishment sees an unending line of customers. The cafe also sells light meals such as open-faced sandwiches and croissant sandwiches, as well as an array of cakes like a moist, low-butter pound cake; and a souffle cheesecake that is baked to order. The cafe is the perfect place to take a break while walking the streets of Yufuin.

Here you can enjoy exceptional ""yoshoku"" Japanese-style Western food along with a view of Lake Kinrin. The Ranpusya Set meal has been the restaurant's popular choice since its inception; the meal can be ordered with a Bungo beef hamburg steak dripping with the delicious juices Japanese wagyu beef is known for. You can also choose among different sauces, such as a Japonaise sauce or demi-glace sauce, and the meal also comes with a seasonal salad and dessert. Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don't hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
