    Opened by the Emperor’s chef Shiro Miyagawa in 1926, this Toriten chicken shop emerged in the early days of the Showa period as a place for chicken kamaboko tempura. Nowadays it is famous for its food loved dearly by those of Oita Prefecture. One can enjoy various tastes by adding Oita Prefecture kabosu or vinegar soy sauce and mustard. The standard menu’s “Honke Toriten Teishoku” is satisfyingly voluminous. From Beppu Station take the Kamenoi bus towards APU, alight at Funakouji, and walk five minutes.

    A gyoza (jyaozi, pot sticker) specialty restaurant sitting snugly in an alley off the main strip in front of the station. The only items on the menu are fried gyoza and bottled beer. The restaurant serves 15 gyoza per serving, which can be a bit much for one person, but many eat up two dishes alone for the shop’s gyoza are not oily but bite-sized, simple treats. Only counter seating is available and a line often forms, but turnaround is quick and wait times are small. Takeout is also available. A five-minute walk from JR Beppu Station.

The restaurant also offers a full array of set meals, basashi horsemeat sashimi, and yukhoe rice bowls. Some of the items on the menu are offered at extra low prices or may be specially discounted at times.
