This large-scale shopping mall has a movie theater and a rooftop garden. Inside you’ll find about 160 shops, from fashion to miscellaneous goods. There are plentiful facilities for kids and many services for parents, including a big playground, a kids’ space, baby rooms, and a nursing room. This makes the mall very popular with families with kids.

This craft shop, facing the Important Cultural Property-designated Kusano Honke, primarily sells handmade Japanese dorei pottery bells. Dorei bells are a craft which have been widely used since ancient times because they are said to ward away evil and misfortune. The shop's hina doll bells are particularly recommended and are crafted by covering an unpainted pottery bell with handmade Japanese washi paper and painting it with a face and clothing using traditional black ink. Other products the shop sells include dorei bells modeled after the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and clay ohajiki pieces decorated with colorful flowers used to play a traditional Japanese children's game of the same name. The shop is also a great place to look for souvenirs of your trip.

The facility operates out of a remodeled residence which once belonged to the Hoashi family, who built their fortune through sake brewing. There are also seven other facilities on the grounds: A cafe, restaurant, confectionary shop, souvenir shop, free-use space, sake brewery with a museum, and garden. The shop’s jams, lovingly made with seasonal fruit primarily from Oita Prefecture, are popular for how the flavor and fragrances of the ingredients come through in the finished product. The winter only “yuzu-neri” jam is so popular it disappears from the shelves very fast but makes an excellent gift if you can get your hands on it. The interior of the shop, located inside a late Edo period merchant’s house, is charming and subdued.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
