The Dotonbori Annex of the famous tonkotsu (pork bone) ramen restaurant Ichiran. The retro Showa fashioned store is adorned with tables where you can enjoy a conversation with friends or family over a bowl of ramen. Their tonkotsu broth is a closely guarded secret refined over many years. Come taste the unique flavor of their noodles paired with a secret blend of chili pepper in their tonkotsu ramen. Ichiran's famous solo counter spaces are also available for the single customer.

Personal preference is to choose thicker broth and more garlic. Had ramen with better umami in other restaurants. Ichiran is convenient in a sense that it is located within a tourist district, if...

A venerable okonomiyaki savory pancake shop located in Osaka City’s Chuo Ward founded in 1945 in the postwar devastated Minami area. This restaurant sees an unending line of patrons waiting to get in consisting not only of long-going regulars but also tourists from throughout Japan and the world. Harnessing the distinct deliciousness of the ingredients used, the shop’s okonomiyaki taste good even without sauce and are made according to an old fashioned, secret recipe passed down over the years. The shop’s most popular menu item is its “yamaimo-yaki,” a type of okonomiyaki made with Japanese yams instead of flour along with hearty portions of scallops, pork, and shrimp.

Was in Osaka March last year and didnt go here because i dont wait in queues. Thanks to Corona, there were no Chinese tourist, hence, no queues to wait in. This place was so good, we went the...

A venerable takoyaki octopus dumpling shop located next to Namba Grand Kagetsu in Osaka City’s Chuo Ward. Known as the orthodox paragon of the flavor of Osaka takoyaki, almost every day sees long lines of tourists and locals waiting outside the shop’s door. The shop’s vaunted dough, made with a kombu kelp and bonito dashi stock, is fried up crisp on the outside and chewy and viscous on the inside. In addition to standard takoyaki sauce, the shop offers soy sauce, a spring onion and salt sauce, and a seasonal sauce to popular acclaim. Eat-in space available.

Osaka is the Japanese capital of street food and one of its signature dishes is takoyaki. In the area of Namba/Dotonbori Ive found Wanaka and during my holiday I ended up eating takoyaki there every...

Kushikatsu Daruma head office is a very famous specialty kushikatsu (a grilled skewer) restaurant even for Shinsekai, a famous sightseeing place in Osaka. This well-established restaurant opened in 1929. It is also well-known as the birthplace of kushikatsu and often featured on TV and in magazines. It achieves a perfect balance by extracting the taste of ingredients with an uncompromising quality of batter, sauce and oil. The famous Original Kushikatsu, which is succulent beef in freshly fried crispy batter covered with sauce, has an irresistible taste. There are only 12 seats at the counter, so waiting in the queue is unavoidable.

Our guide said he could eat 50 skewers. My question:WHY? In a city known for great beef, pork, seafood and vegetables, at this restaurant you get slivers of unremarkable filling in breaded skewers...

    Osaka Osakashi Chuou-ku Sennichimae 2-3-17
Fukutaro located in Chuo Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture is an okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake) restaurant and is famous with long queues. The most popular dish is the negiyaki using plenty of green spring onion produced in Osaka. It is an exclusive dish in which the homemade soy based sauce goes well with the flavor of the batter, and the Sujinegiyaki with beef sinew is particularly popular. As seafood such as octopus, scallops and oysters is purchased directly from Osaka Chuo Market, it is freshness itself. There is a range of okonomiyaki with a springy texture and a la carte menu items. Inside the restaurant, it offers an atmosphere of an old-fashioned okonomiyaki restaurant in downtown Osaka. Booking is not available.

Amazing fresh food served. Staff are friendly and very helpful. The menu’s at the time unfortunately were only available in Japanese but the staff were kind enough to take me through in English...

Kinryu Ramen (Dotonbori Branch) located in downtown Dotonbori in Osaka is a ramen noodle restaurant with a gigantic dragon as a landmark. It is a popular ramen noodle franchise featuring a food stall village style and is crowded with many people from regular local customers to tourists. Pork bone broth made from slowly stewed pig bones and chicken legs with a secret sauce has a rich taste but a light aftertaste. Toppings such as kimchi (a fermented Korean pickle), garlic chives and garlic are free of charge. As it is open 24 hours, many people drop in to eat as a last meal after drinking parties. The closest station is Namba Station.

Nothing special about the ramen here but I stopped by here shortly after a round of drinks with some friends. Would go back again and consciously taste the ramen!

    Osaka Osakashi Chuou-ku Nishishinsaibashi 2-7-27
A venerable “yoshoku” Japanese-style Western restaurant located in Osaka City’s Chuo Ward said to be the originator of omelet rice. It is believed that a dish created for a regular with a weak stomach who always ordered rice and omelets in 1925 became the model for the popular Japanese dish. The restaurant is housed in a tea ceremony house-style purely Japanese building and the omelet rice served here tastes extra special when eaten while seated on a zabuton cushion on the tatami mat floor. In addition to standard ketchup-based omelet rice, the restaurant also serves a wide variety of variations, such as hayashi sauce and beef stew-based versions.

A famous takoyaki octopus dumpling shop located in America-Mura in Osaka City’s Chuo Ward said to be the originator of the “amikake mayonnaise” style of takoyaki, which is fast become the standard for takoyaki today. Since the shop was first opened, it has only used carefully selected, highest quality ingredients, including a specially made mayonnaise and select octopus. The dough, made with a dashi stock prepared from seven varieties of ingredients and mixed with Japanese yam, is flavorful, spongy, and addictive. In addition to standard takoyaki sauce, the shop also offers a negipon spring onion and yuzu sauce as well as a popular black pepper and salt mayonnaise. Eat-in space available.

Hot, hot, hot! My fault I took a bite too quickly. As I said, we got here when there was no one else. The cook took her time fixing and prepping the takoyaki. It always makes a difference when...

    Osaka Osakashi Chuou-ku Namba 3-1-34
One of the oldest “yoshoku” Japanese-style Western restaurants in Osaka, founded in 1910, famous for its curry rice. The shop’s renowned curry is served mixed with rice and topped with a raw egg, an idea born out of a desire to serve piping hot curry in a time when no commercial warming or reheating devices were available. The only toppings (other than the raw egg) are onions and beef. The shop’s “light” dashi stock gives the curry a unique flavor, and adding some sauce provided at each table further enhances the deliciousness. The closest station is Namba Station.

This restaurant features Japanese style Western food. Especially the famous cuisine is curry cooked with their own recipe. A typical Japanese curry puts curry soup on rice, but their curry was mixed...

    Osaka Sakaishi Sakai-ku Shinzaikechouhigashi 1-2-1
This long-established Japanese-style confectionary store, located in Sakai, was founded in 1329, in the late Kamakura period. Their specialty walnut mochi's name is derived from green soybean paste wrapped in mochi. The exquisite balance of the product's softness and the bean paste's smoothness is something people never tire of, according to its reputation. Their take-out menu is so popular that there is always a line extending out of the store. Additionally, seated within the eat-in space inside the store, customers can also enjoy shaved-ice walnut mochi, as well as the store's regular walnut mochi.

The dessert here are ok... not as refined as in Kyoto. Service is lacking. Can skip if you have no time to wait in the queue.

The Shinsaibashi branch of the long-established Kushikatsu Daruma chain opens at 11:00 a.m. and has plenty of tables, so it attracts lots of family groups at lunchtime. The main focus of the menu is, as the restaurant’s name suggests, kushikatsu (Japanese-style deep-fried kebabs), but there is also a wide range of reasonably-priced set meals, including doteyaki (beef tendons stewed in miso and mirin) etc. Adults accompanying children who order less than a specified amount will be required to pay an additional cover charge, so it works out cheaper to order plenty of kushikatsu.

Good kushikatsu. A bit greasy. The recommended 9 piece set is more than enough for one person. Very friendly and helpful staff.
