  • Amazake Chaya tea house
    Gourmet / Alcohol
Kanagawa Pref. Ashigarashimogunhakonemachi Hatajuku Nikozan 395-28
This is a Japanese tea house with 400years of tradition located in a dangerous spot of the Tokaido road, halfway up Mt. Hakone. During the Edo period, the tea house was used as a rest area before the Hakone checking station, while nowadays it is more familiar as a rest area for hikers walking through Hakone. The production process for “amazake” (a traditional Japanese drink made from fermented rice) has remained unchanged since ancient times, using koji (rice malt) has been used in the fermentation process since the Edo period; the amazake is non-alcoholic, has a gentle sweetness even though it is produced without sugar, so it has been used to good advantage by travelers to get rid of fatigue. There are also packs of amazake which you can buy to take home. One of the shop’s specialties is also “Chikara-mochi” (a glutinous rice cake) which is gently baked over charcoal until it puffs up.

Ramen Sugita-ya is the first directly managed restaurant by Yoshimura-ya, which is widely known for its iekei-style ramen (pork bone broth with soy sauce and strait noodles). For many years it has carefully preserved the flavor and taste of its birthplace ramen. Large amounts of chicken bones and pork bones are used as a base for a broth of exquisite thickness. The cooks are proud of the careful, rhythmic way in which they drain water from the noodles, for this is one action that helps determine the taste. Inside the shop is a notice board that shows how to eat ramen in a tastier way. The shop opens quite early, at 5:00 a.m.

Superb delicious lamen. Only 15 seats always busy with queues to taste the most marvelous lamen you can eat in Japan. Broth is cooked in large pans. Show lamen cookers

This tofu shop located two minutes on foot from Gora Station has been frequented by famous Hakone hotels, restaurants and local people alike for over 100 years since it was established. The shakuri-dofu, which is scooped straight from the still-warm freshly-made tofu, is popular and tourists flock to this tiny shop looking for the high-quality tofu that can only be sampled here. As it often sells out before lunchtime, it is better to visit in the morning.
