A popular ramen restaurant that is also one of Kagoshima's best located in the Temmonkan-dori shopping arcade. As its name implies in Japanese, the restaurant's specialty Tontoro Ramen is topped with pork that practically melts in your mouth. The broth, made with pork bones, chicken bones, and seafood, is surprisingly light, making it popular with the shop's women customers as well. The rice with roasted pork is also popular and includes a heaping helping of chashu roast pork made with neck meat, a rare delicacy of which only a small amount can be obtained from one animal. A three-minute walk from Takamibaba Station on the municipal tram.

Really love the ramen. It came with char siew that melts in your mouth. The soup was so good that we drank all of it. A small shop that could only sit 16 people purely meant for quick eat and no...

A restaurant specializing in local Satsuma (Kagoshima) cuisine located on the north side of the Tenmonkan. Diners can enjoy a variety of colorful Kagoshima dishes, including pork bone and belly meat slow stewed for three hours until it can be cut with chopsticks, shabu-shabu with Roppaku Kurobuta pork from Kagoshima, sake-zushi fermented overnight with only local sake, fresh silver-striped round herring sashimi caught in Kagoshima Bay (Kinkou Bay) and served with a homemade mustard and vinegared miso sauce, and satsumaage deep-fried fish paste. Private rooms in a variety of sizes are also available, making this a perfect place to have a party or banquet.

This long-established eel specialty restaurant is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Tenmonkan Street in the downtown area. The restaurant uses the eels from Osumi Peninsula, which are special even among Kagoshima’s abundance of eel farms, due to the care taken in raising them with the spring water from the Shirasu Plateau. Soaked in a secret sauce that had been handed down for around 80 years, the restaurant’s prized eels are grilled over a charcoal fire. Popular menu items include the “Unadon” and “Unaju,” which are bursting with the delicious taste of the eels. A square of colored paper on which the children’s author, Hatoju Muku wrote “Sueyoshi has the best eel in Japan” is displayed here.

I ordered the small size(梅) of うなぎ重. It came in a box with 2 layers, first layer was grilled eel and lower one was rice. As soon as you opened the box, you could catch the nice aroma of charcoal...

A new food theme park a five-minute walk from Kagoshima-Chuo Station which was just opened in 2012. The park is home to 25 yatai (food stands) offering the unique flavors of Kagoshima, including local dishes, kushiage (deep fried skewers), seafood, eels, and tonkotsu (pork bone broth) ramen, as well as a shochu (Japanese white liquor) bar which doubles as an information center. The park is dedicated to local production for local consumption, reasonable prices, and hospitality; the friendly Kagoshima dialect with which patrons are greeted is also sure to make you smile.

This place is filled with locals! Thats the first hint that we hit jackpot on our perfect supper place in Kagoshima! The place was bustling with Japanese chilling over beer and all kinds of bar food...

By day, this is a mathematics café, and by night, a mathematics cram school. It is located in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The café’s carefully selected coffee beans are for sale here, and the café roasts those same beans upon receiving an order for a coffee. The café also has a food menu with items such as black pork gristle curry and Wagyu steak rice bowls. The cute appearance and lavish fruit topping of Kagoshima’s famous dessert, Shirokuma, makes it a popular item on the sweets menu. Customers can ask for math questions, and people who correctly answer them can get presents.

A shabu-shabu specialty restaurant which makes use of Berkshire pork. Produced by “Sobachaya Fukiagean” Japanese soba noodle restaurant chain, here customers can enjoy their shabu-shabu with a soba noodle-style tsuyu sauce flavored with dashi. Customers can also get free refills of this light and tasty tsuyu. The meats on offer primarily consist of cuts of Berkshire pork raised in Kagoshima and fed copious amounts of sweet potatoes. The restaurant’s shabu-shabu is accented with special yuzu pepper. Customers can finish off their meal with the company’s fresh, handmade soba noodles.

A Japanese izakaya pub which serves local Satsuma (Kagoshima) chicken and kamameshi rice pots. The pub’s chicken is stocked that very morning from a free-range farm in Kagoshima City. Particularly popular menu choices include the ultra-fresh chicken sashimi, charcoal grilled chicken, and karaage fried chicken. The pub also offers laboriously crafted tsukune chicken meatloaf. The pub’s other signature dish, its kamameshi rice hot pots, are created without rushing and customers will have to wait 30–40 minutes from the time of their order before they can eat. The pub’s seafood, fresh-caught in the waters off of Kagoshima, and its over 1,000 varieties of local shochu liquors, are also popular.

A café owned and operated by the Satsuma Jokiya Japanese confectionary company and located in the Tenmonkan Pira Mall shopping arcade in Kagoshima. The café is located on the second floor of the Kakashi Yokocho confectionary shop and can be reached by taking the stairs inside the establishment. A classic “yoshoku” Japanese-style Western food restaurant. An old-fashioned case filled with plastic models of the restaurant’s dishes stands in front of the establishment. Inside, the restaurant sports a retro “American” decor. The menu consists of such staple “yoshoku” dishes as hamburg steak; breaded, deep fried shrimp; spaghetti Napolitan; and omelet rice. The restaurant’s signature dish is its “black bear” kurokuma shaved ice, a contrast to the “white bear” shirokuma shaved ice so popular in the region. Kurokuma consists of a light brown flavored ice heaped high in a tall parfait glass. The source of the brown coloring is coffee, and the ice, flavored with condensed milk, is garnished with a refreshing coffee fragrance.

A community-based café. Inside, the café sports a charming and relaxing décor. For its coffee, the café makes use of beans roasted in-house using a unique method which employs lava stone from Sakurajima. The café’s signature light and fluffy “Kiguma” (“yellow bear”) shaved ice, a contrast to the shirokuma (“white bear”) shaved ice so popular in the region, is covered with cut mangoes and mango sauce. Other popular menu selections include moist and chewy pancakes as well as piping hot waffles.

A Berkshire pork cuisine specialty restaurant. The restaurant uses only Berkshire pork raised in Kagoshima and designs its dishes around this meat. The restaurant’s signature black tonkatsu breaded pork cutlet contains charcoal mixed in with the batter. Despite its dark black coloring, this unique, lightly flavored batter covers juicy pork meat. The establishment also offers a variety of local Kagoshima dishes like silver-stripe round herring from the waters off Kagoshima served sashimi style, and satsuma-age deep fried fish paste made with flying fish. There’s also the luxurious Kagoshima Berkshire pork shabu-shabu.

A Japanese izakaya pub which serves local Kagoshima-style cuisine. Passing through the secret hideaway-like entryway, customers are greeted by décor which engenders a soothing, relaxing atmosphere, and the establishment is replete with semi-private and private seating areas. “Shochuan” means “Shochu Hermitage,” and as its name implies, the pub carries a wide lineup of sweet potato shochu liquors. The establishment’s food menu primarily consists of local-style cuisine made with Kagoshima grown vegetables and seafood caught in its coastal waters. The pub also serves healthy and somewhat unconventional vegetable dishes like fried daikon karaage and tomato tempura.

A long-standing ramen restaurant which has been in business since 1950. The establishment continues to make use of an open kitchen layout which, at the time it first opened, was quite unusual. The restaurant’s mainstay ramen consists of a rich yet simple broth, a hearty portion of cabbage, and homemade chashu roasted pork made with Berkshire pork raised in Kagoshima. The Berkshire pork chashu rice side dish, likewise made with this tasty chashu, is also popular. The restaurant also offers takeout and mail order ramen using semi-fresh noodles.
