This long-standing store in the heart of Matsuyama, Shikoku's largest city, offers Nabeyaki-Udon (hot-pot udon noodle soup), a local soul food. They use small dried sardines from nearby Iyo-Nada Strait and top-class kombu kelp from Rishiri, Hokkaido, to make the carefully guarded flavor of their secret broth which has remained the same ever since their opening in 1949. Their carefully made noodles are permeated with the flavor of their broth before being added to the broth in another pot where the domestically sourced meat is stewed, resulting in an exquisite flavor. Their menu has just two options, the Nabeyaki-Udon served in an aluminum pot, and Inari-zushi (a pouch of fried tofu stuffed with sushi rice). Despite this they've had endless customers ever since they opened. This popular shop is beloved by the locals.

    Ehime Pref. Matsuyamashi Sambanchou 3-5-4
You’ll find this longstanding local restaurant in Sanban Town, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. It opened during the Kanei period. Enjoy some traditional Ehime cuisine amid the subdued, authentic Japanese ambiance, such as sea bream somen noodles, sea bream rice, jakoten (a kind of fried kamaboko), and more. The sea bream somen noodles are the restaurant’s signature dish. They come with a whole small sea bream on top and feature “five-color somen,” which is a favorite in Matsuyama. There are also plenty of fish from the Seto Inland Sea and local vegetables and meat dishes that go well with local Ehime sake.

Yaya Dining is a restaurant located in the Hotel Dogo Yaya in Matsuyama City. The restaurant's specials are made using vegetables grown without the use of agrochemicals on the restaurant's own organic farm. A breakfast buffet and lunch buffet are provided. Besides organic vegetables picked fresh that morning and home-grown rice, there are also other delicious menu options, included hot French toast. Yaya Dining is very popular not only with tourists, but also with locals.

This well-established sweet shop first opened in 1949. Having been featured in a variety of media outlets and television programs, this sweet shop draws plenty of customers from nearby Matsuyama as well as from all over the country. One of their popular options is the Goshoku Ohagi, (five rice balls coated with different flavors, which include coarse sweet red bean paste, strained bean paste, roasted soybean flour, green dried nori seaweed, and sesame), and small-sized rice balls which matches the pleasant sweetness with nice and gooey glutenous rice are their specialties. We recommend enjoying Goshoku Ohagi in the calm and relaxing atmosphere with a hot cup of tea just off the bustling shopping district on main street.

This confectionery opened in 1931 in Okaido, Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, and its most well-known product is its famous “Roken manto” sweet buns. They were originally created at the Institute for Labor Science in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture by adapting sweet buns from China to Japanese tastes, and in Matsuyama during the early Showa period, they were produced and sold to raise money for night school expenses as well as for meals. This café serves sweet known as ohigiri-san by the locals. Batter is poured into a round metal mold then filled with red bean jam and baked – this sweet is usually called obanyaki in Japanese. The name comes from the fact that the sweets are sold beside the Higiri Jizo statue in Matsuyama; it is more well-known than obanyaki in Matsuyama. There are various flavors including the classic red bean jam, white bean jam flavored with yuzu and cream as well as limited availability seasonal flavors. The café also has a mail-order service which is popular for its crème brûlée with custard cream and caramel.

The nabe-yaki has a popularity spanning generations, using a slightly sweet soup developed when sweet food was highly desirable.
