Located along Kawara-machi Street, this Japanese confectioner was founded in 1899. Their famous “nadai mamemochi” features red bean jam and red peas wrapped in freshly-made mochi. It has been around since the founding, and is a standard Kyoto souvenir, popular enough to see people lining up to get some.

    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Sakyou-ku Shimogamomatsunokichou 53
A venerable tea house located across from Shimogamo-jinja Shrine in Kyoto City’s Sakyo Ward said to be the originator of mitarashi dango dumplings in a sweet soy sauce glaze. The chewy dumplings of the shop’s signature mitarashi dango go well with the mild brown sugar and soy sauce glaze and are broiled to perfection, giving them a toasty flavor. The shop is purely Japanese in décor and design, and in addition to takeout, patrons can enjoy their treats in the eat-in space. The shop’s seasonal items like zenzai sweet bean soup, warabi mochi bracken starch dumplings, and shaved ice are also popular.

They continue to make traditional Kyoto confections while striving ever further to create better treats searching for a candy enlightenment. One of the shops stand out confections is their Famous Kyoto Unryu treat. Each is made by hand with the finest large Tanba Dainagon red beans and shaped to represent a dragon riding atop a cloud. This restaurant offers a full range of orthodox western-style dishes including hamburger steaks, fried shrimp, and beef stew. The restaurant, which makes all of their sauces, dressings, mayonnaise, and breading by hand, puts much time and effort into its many dishes. Each of them has a gentle and nostalgic taste. It is easy to see why the restaurant, which is one of the most popular Western-style restaurants in Kyoto, has so many repeat customers.

    昭和の雰囲気漂う店内は、清潔感があります。 定番メニューをオーダー。期待通りの美味しさでした。常連客もいらっしゃるようで、すぐに満席に。 入ることを諦める方も数組みかけました。かなり人気店のようですね。

A short walk south from Imadegawa-dori Street to Kawaramachi-dori Street is Mitsubachi, a Japanese sweets cafe which makes particularly good use of the raw ingredients. The most popular Shiratama Anmitsu (rice flour dumpling with bean paste) uses top quality red algae from Chiba Prefecture, and it is loved for the wonderful combination of brown sugar syrup, freshly cooked red peas and sweet & sour apricot. Limited items include shaved ice covered in apricot syrup during summer, and hot red bean soup during winter. The shaved ice in particular is so popular that it is sure to be sold out if one does not go to the store early.

This Kyoto obanzai shop on the restored first floor of a machiya (townhouse) which was used as the residence of the female owner-manager, has seating that includes views of the inner courtyard as well as horigotatsu (recessed, heated floor seats), and the restaurant has a relaxed home-style atmosphere. The obanzai, which is perfected by the okami’s preferred raw materials and seasonings, is Kyoto-style home cooking that is easy on the body. The limited lunch set is popular for allowing guests to try four types of obanzai dishes with tempura, soy milk gratin or namafu (wheat gluten) dengaku (tofu (or fish, etc.) baked and coated with miso) and rice all at once. The closest station is Kawaramachi Station.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
