Tenka Ippin started its life as an outdoor ramen stand in 1971. It owes its continuing popularity to its broth, which is rich but with a clean aftertaste. The restaurant has grown and now has many branches, but the original branch has some unique menu items, and you will find yourself wondering which of the many varieties to choose.

There appears to be more than one location for this restaurant, as this is the very exact same menu as the one we ate at on the corner 272-5 Matsubarachō. Tenkaippin ramen restaurant gave a lot of...

A café located on the road approaching Kifune-jinja Shrine in Kyoto City. The shop’s knotted Japanese cedar wood, antique chairs, Nestor Marting wood heater gives it a retro atmosphere. The windows covering one wall gives customers the chance to enjoy the verdant scenery of the Kifune area. The shop’s menu includes matcha lattes and coffee as well as sweets such as matcha parfaits and warabi mochi dumplings. From April to October, the café also serves light Japanese meals such as yuba (tofu skin) donburi rice bowls and kamameshi rice. Kifune Club also makes a perfect place to stop and have lunch in the middle of a stroll.

In places, there is hardly room for the mountain stream, the occasional dwelling, shop or cafe and the lane which winds its way up this magical, narrow valley, flanked by Mount Kurayama. After an...

Diners are encouraged to try the restaurant’s famed sweet warabi mochi dumplings and coffee made with water from the spring under the Kurumayama Kannon figure. Be sure to stop by when visiting the Kurumadera temple, famed for being a site of mystical energy.

We booked this place at the beginning of our climb (trek) on mount Kurama and ordered our meal in advance for the return (we ordered the biggest of the 3 set menu selections). We climbed and...

"Situated a short distance west of the Shogoin Temple, this is the main shop of a long-standing yatsuhashi cinnamon rice flour confections shop which was established in 1689. Using choice cinnamon, rice flour, and other select ingredients, the shop slightly changes the balance of ingredients used in its recipes depending on seasonal conditions to ensure its yatsuhashi always have the same great taste. The shop also still uses mixing kettles made in the early Showa period, continuing to make its treats the old fashioned way by hand. In addition to the standard ""Shogoin Yatsuhashi,"" the shop sells raw yatsuhashi and a variety of seasonal yatsuhashi flavors. The shop also makes and sells new products such as the ""Kaneru,"" yatsuhashi curled up into churro-like sticks."

"A three-minute walk from the ""Kitano Tenmangu-mae"" and ""Kamishichiken"" bus stops. This beer garden is located on the grounds of the Kamishichiken Kaburenjo Theater. The beer garden is open from early July through early September, excluding the Bon Festival period. There are no designated seating areas and seats are distributed throughout the garden to the balustrade and the parlor and building. Customers, however, cannot choose where they will sit and are instead seated by staff. Geisha and maiko who perform in the theater walk around the beer garden dressed in costume and hand out ""senjafuda"" business cards which are considered good luck charms. In addition to a required initial beer set, the garden serves a variety of beverages and a la carte foods."

Just four minute walk from exit number four of the Kitayama Station on the Karasuma Subway line, this historic western cuisine restaurant is located across from the north gate of the Kyoto Botanical Gardens, and was established in 1897. Marketed as the restaurant with one hundred years of western cuisine in Kyoto, the restaurant has preserved the founding motto of ‘We want many people to enjoy our delicious food at a reasonable price.” Known for their Toyotei special, the hamburger steak with a hot creamy baked potato slathered with butter is one of the most popular dishes, and their chilled ‘whole tomato salad’ is also popular.

This is a teahouse in front of the Imamiya Shrine east gate. Established over 400 years ago, the family art of confectionery has been passed on to the next daughter for each successive generation. The specialty is Aburi mochi. It is a rice cake dredged with soy flour and then grilled with a white miso sauce. At the storefront, one can watch the mochi being grilled, on bamboo skewers, igushi, which have been blessed by the Imamiya Shrine and are said to be effective in preventing disease and bad fortune. In addition to eating-in, take out orders for 3 or more can be ordered to go.

A traditional tea house with friendly staff, good service and great food. The moment I tasted my first aburimochi I knew Id be hooked. Here I am months later still thinking about them.

"The Kifune region, often called ""a place of retreat of Kyoto,"" is surrounded by a quiet natural environment. This inconspicuous restaurant and inn stands along the road that leads upstream of the Kifune River. Guests can enjoy listening to the sounds of the river while partaking of seasonal cuisine such as dishes featuring wild edible plants in the spring, food served on riverbed platform in the summer, handmade sweets and cafe items in the fall, and boar meat hot pot in the winter."

This rather stylish hamburger steak restaurant is located in the Ichijioji neighborhood of Sakyo Ward. Its incredibly juicy hamburger steaks are grilled on an iron griddle and served with your choice of sauce. Each comes on a bed of Kyoto bean sprouts that are delicious in their own right. The restaurant's weekday-only Loco Moco lunches feature a fried egg on top of a hamburger steak served on butter rice. They also come with seasonal salad and grilled vegetables, miso soup, an espresso, and a dessert, making them an incredible bargain.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
