Candy Store

A café operated by and adjoining the Ogawa location of the Kyoto confectionery shop Tawaraya Yoshitomi, famed for its “unryu” bean jam cakes, a Kyoto specialty. The café is located on Teranouchi-dori Avenue diagonally opposite the Hokyoji temple. Patrons can enjoy anmitsu jelly with syrup, mitsumame beans in syrup, matcha green tea, and fresh Japanese sweet sets in the café’s quiet dining space which seats up to eight people. The café also serves simple, seasonal sweets which harness the innate flavors of the ingredients involved such as shaved ice and zenzai sweet bean soup.

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
