This izakaya is five minutes on foot from the Keihan Main Line's Fushimi Momoyama Station in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. They feature a variety of chicken-based cuisine including skewers made with domestic poultry. Housed in a refurbished Shinsei sake warehouse, they have tanks of Kuradashi unprocessed sake delivered directly to the brewery that guests enjoy poured fresh. They have private rooms and can accommodate group banquets, too.

Excellent ‘locals’ restaurant within the Gion area. A very small space which gets busy so either come early or be prepared to wait. Cheap and delicious.

At Kizakura Sakaba guests can enjoy Kizakura sake and local craft beer in a charming brewery atmosphere with the diversity of drink options that you'd expect of a brewery-run shop. The building maintains the dynamic framing of the former main shop's warehouse as it's always been, and a beer keg awaits you at the storefront on the stone-paved approach to the entrance.

A café founded in 1914 located along the stone steps of Ninenzaka in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. The menu remains virtually unchanged since the café was first opened, maintaining historic, handmade flavors. Said to have been a favorite of Taisho period painter Yumeji Takehisa, the interior is reminiscent of this era and is both unusual and somehow nostalgic. The café’s specialty is its sanshoku hagi-no-mochi, which gives diners the chance to enjoy three varieties of ohagi rice cakes filled with sweet red bean paste. The Kyoto Zenzai, a sweet red bean soup, is also a favorite of patrons thanks to its delicate deliciousness. In summer, the most popular item is the tokusei shiruko shake, cooled sweet red bean soup with rice flour dumplings.

A long-standing Japanese confectioner that was founded in 1885. It was originally called Yamashiro-ya but changed to the current name after their flagship product, their Daigokuden treat, became a huge success. The Daigokuden treat, as presented to the Heian-Jingu Shrine, is a baked confection filled with smooth white bean paste. It's a masterpiece that melts in your mouth filling it with an unchanging gentle sweetness. Despite being a Japanese-style confectioner their castella cake is also popular with a simple egg flavor that you can never grow tired of.

This Japanese confectionary has been making treats evoking the breath of the seasons and urban elegance for over 100 years. Look for the massive storefront on the corner of Nijo-dori avenue and Ogawa-dori street. The shop's flagship product, Fukukuri, uses a whole large chestnut wrapped in two layers, one of chestnut paste and another of sweet bean paste, and finished with youkan bean jelly. It looks just like an unshelled chestnut, so it's as fun to look at as it is to eat. The sweetness is just right to let you enjoy the natural taste of the ingredients. Their Yakiimo manju buns, made with Japanese yam, Furosen pouring hot water into the bowl to make kuzuyu, and so on the product of years of experience, are delightfully colorful traditional Kyoto sweets as well.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
