This old shop operating from the entrance of Komachi-dori Street for the past 65 years first opened for business in 1948. It is a café with a history of well-known customers including Yasunari Kawabata. Their famous pancake which takes 30 minutes to cook costs 800 yen.

This is a coffee house that will grind and drip your coffee after ordering. There is a rich variety of beans, and the shop sells both beans by the bag as well goods to prepare them to be tasty, not to mention several books on the subject. The morning set with crispy aromatic waffles is also popular.

This is the Hase branch of the Yukinoshita German bread and confectionery store. They run a bakery and café, with the German hard bread sandwich being popular. The “Berg sandwich set” which contains a selection of three breads topped with tuna or sausage, soup, coffee or tea and dessert, is the shop’s recommended lunch.

Visited thanks to one of our party whod been here before, for its not so easy to find, but so glad we did. Delightful little tea-room with bakery... and a wonderful range of pastries and cakes...

“Caraway” is a well-known European curry house in the first alleyway off of Komachi-dori Street, around a six-minute walk from Kamakura Station. An old shop operating since 1978, there tends to be a queue of Kamakura local fans on weekends who come for the voluminous portions and reasonable prices. A treat is the slow-cooked curry which contains over 30 types of spice and comes with an extra-large helping of rice.

If you are a curry fan, please visit and try the cheese curry version. For kids, they have a non spicy version which I believe they will enjoy. Small shop with quick service. Great choice of...

This is a popular Japanese-style sweet shop on the road from Kamakura Station west exit to Zeniarai Benzaiten Shrine. Guests of any age can spend a relaxing time in the simple, refined interior. The courtyard is a Japanese-style garden with benches and arbors. They make each person’s sweet to order, and with this freshness comes a unique elasticity and pleasant feeling of the sweet going down one’s throat. The easy-to-eat “kuzukiri” (kudzu starch noodles) with refreshingly sweet black sugar is a popular option.

This is an old Japanese teahouse established in 1968, around a five-minute walk from the entrance of Komachi-dori Street from Kamakura Station. Rebuilt in 2011, it nevertheless retains the calm and refined atmosphere of the time. The most popular choice is “cream anmitsu” (syrup-covered bean jam) where one can choose ice cream topped with vanilla or matcha powdered tea. The “Ogura Shiratama,” where one can eat many freshly-made doughy shiratama (rice dumplings) is another popular option.

This Japanese sweets store is located just near the ticket gates of Enoden’s Hase Station. The main store is a well-established shop that was established in 1937. Their famous Kamakura Dora-yaki, in which raw dough is carefully baked one layer at a time and matched with their signature red bean paste, has been designated as a Kamakura Recommended Product by the Kamakura Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The branch in front of Hase Station does demonstrations and sales of dorayaki in the storefront, and one can also try fresh-baked dora-yaki which usually cannot be had at other places. Visitors can also purchase several varieties of dora-yaki such as the strawberry dora-yaki which is only available for a limited season.

This is a taiyaki (fish-shaped pancake filled with bean jam) shop located along Yuigahama Odori, about three minutes on foot from Enoshima Dentetsu’s Yuigahama Station. Not only do they offer taiyaki made with carefully crafted honey-baked tsubuan (coarse red bean paste) and fresh, velvety smooth koshian (fine-grained sweet bean paste), they also have a full lineup of other items including natural yeast bread, yakisoba, and grilled piroshky.

Established in 1929, this is a well-established eel restaurant in Kamakura whose closest station is Enoshimsa Dentetsu’s Wadazuka Station. Thanks to the secret sauce that has not changed over several decades, the plump eel is characteristic for its elegant taste with a subtle sweetness. All of their eel dishes are prepared only after the order is received, so cooking takes about one hour to prepare. It is recommended to visit after making a reservation. Children that are not yet of school age are not allowed.

As a frequent Japan visitor, I really Don’t recommend this place. The modern generation of Japanese are open-minded and this restaurant sadly live in the atone age honor when Kawabata Yasunari has...

This bakery wants its customers to eat food that is safe with peace of mind. They use a stone mortar to grind their own wheat flour which incorporates husked barley, and they use items that are 100% natural such as yeast which requires fermentation, herbs, beer, seasonal fruits, and yogurt. The shop is easily identified by its statue of Charlie Chaplin standing out in front.

This Western sweets shop has been designed around the theme of a villa in Kamakura’s sister city of Nice in southern France. It has a tranquil, relaxed atmosphere despite being close to the station, and around February visitors will notice the smell of the mimosa flowers in bloom. With careful attention to ingredients, they arrange European traditional sweets to fit the tastes of Japanese. Their pretzels and Petit Four Sales salt cookies made with a blend of Shonan Kamakura salt and French Guérande salt are particularly popular for gifts.

This western-style food restaurant has been around in Kamakura Hase since long ago. With a chic and elegant atmosphere, it is so popular that it is full of people even around lunchtime. The main menu features beef stew and hamburg steak while the demi-glace sauce is also popular.

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
