Visitors to Shikisai-no-oka in the summer can enjoy the beautiful vistas of colorful flower fields, while in the winter they can experience standing in the midst of a vast expanse of snow. Besides the extensive flower gardens, farmers’ fields and Alpaca ranch, Shikisai-no-oka also has a farm guesthouse where visitors can stay. The farm shop sells vegetables grown locally, as well as other products sourced directly from local farmers. Shikisai-no-oka is located 25 minutes’ walk from JR Bibaushi Station.

The flowers were very colourful and beautiful, even on a wet and rainy day. Its free to enter, and you only have to pay if you want to take the rides. Worth a visit to see the immense fields of...

    Hokkaido Hakodate-shi Motomachi 19-7
The ropeway at Mt. Hakodate is about a ten-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop and about ten minutes by car from Hakodate Station and right next to the ruins of the Nambujinya encampment. The gondolas are large with seating for 125 people, and have two stations, one at the base of the mountain and also at the peak observatory station. The top speed is seven meters per second and the top of the 334-meter-high mountain is reached in about three minutes. The beautiful seasonal scenery from the observatory deck at the summit and night view of Hakodate is highly regarded as the world's best and is a representative of tourism in the city. It is often crowded for an hour or two after sunset with people visiting to see the night view.

Quite crowded during the sunset time. But it was worth waiting when the lights in the city slowly brighten up. But the view is great. Eventhough it was also crowded in the ropeway during the way...

"This ropeway joining the Sounkyo Hot Spring with Mt. Kurodake sits as the front entrance to Daisetsuzan National Park. The large-scale gondola fits 101 people, and takes you up to the fifth station of Mt. Kurodake. If you continue on by taking the lift, you can get up to the seventh station at an elevation of 1520 meters. It is used by both casual tourists, and mountain climbers headed for the peak. It takes seven minutes one-way, and comes at 20-minute intervals. On days with good weather, you can get above the ""cloud sea"" and see the Mt. Daisetsuzan Mountain Range."

The walk around the summit requires a certain amount of dexterity but the views are very good. It can be very cold and windy so wear warm clothing. The day I was there the temperature was just below...

    Hokkaido Kamikawa-gun Higashi-kawacho Asahidake Onsen
This ropeway connects Asahidake Onsen (1,100 meters above sea level) to the Fifth Station at 1,600 meters above sea level. It is located at the foot of Asahidake, the highest peak in Hokkaido. Visitors can enjoy a massive 360-degree panorama over the course of this ten-minute air walk. The ropeway is one of the main sightseeing spots in Asahidake, where visitors can enjoy views of the changing seasons, such as the white skunk cabbage and the melting snow as it flows towards the wetlands in the spring, and see the alpine plants in full bloom on the summit of the mountain in the summer. Of all of the views the ropeway has to offer, the most popular is the scenic views reminiscent of spilled paint covering the mountain when the leaves turn red in the autumn. And in the winter, natural phenomena such as diamond dust and sun pillar may occur, which draw many cameramen who come to capture these moments.

The ropeway is a convenient way to get to the base of Mount Asahidake. You can then walk a loop to the fumeroles and back. The views are lovely on the trip up and down. Park at the information...

You can find the ticket center and dock at the Otaru Canal Chuobashi Bridge located about a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station towards the port. You can enjoy the history and romance of Otaru City from the canal boat with cruises lasting about 40 minutes. With the gas-powered street lights along the canal, the night cruises are a beautiful sight to behold. During the cold winter a canopy covers the boat and heaters are provided to keep passengers warm.

Its a short cruise and probably because we took the cruise in the day the canal didnt seem very interesting. Even though there isnt much to see but the history of Otaru Canal is interesting. We...

The Shiretoko Sightseeing Boat operates daily from the end of April to the end of October. The primitive landscape seen from the ship is an exceptional view. Due to its large size the ship is stable and does not rock so much. You can enjoy the scenery leisurely from either a non-reserved seat on the first floor or a reserved seat on the second floor, but the observation deck is recommended if you want to take great photos. It is about 50 minutes by bus from JR Shiretoko Shari Station. It takes about two hours by car from Memanbetsu Airport.

Reached there a day earlier to book for the cruise the next day but they were not able to confirm due to weather conditions . Apparently there were no cruises on that day due to choppy seas. The...

The world’s first drift ice-breaker cruise ship Garinko, began in 1987, was replaced with Garinko 2 in 1997, has a total length of 35 meters and can carry up to 195 passengers. In summer it is also acts as a fishing boat and proves to be a powerful force throughout the year. Because it’s the northernmost sea in Japan this is where you’ll find ice-breakers. You can reach the Garinko by a connecting bus in about twelve minutes from Okhotsk Monbetsu Airport. It takes about three hours by intercity bus from JR Asahikawa Station. They also have plenty of events going on all through the year.

I loved this cruise. It was amazing to see the ice from Russia washing up on the shores of Hokkaido. The ride is super cold but the lower deck gets comfy and warm if you just want to relax and enjoy...

At Kanno Farm, visitors can enjoy viewing a wide variety of different flowers and crops, including lavender (which comes into bloom around mid-July). The “Kinkonkanno” farm shop, which was renovated in 2010, sells a range of original lavender-themed goods, as well as vegetables and soft-serve ice cream delivered from a nearby pastoral farm. Kanno Farm is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Asahikawa Airport, and 10 minutes’ walk from JR Bibaushi Station.

This farm is the smallest farm that we had visited during our trip. Less touristy but still nice. They do sell flower seeds, souvenir and local food at the little store in the farm.

There are plenty of things to do such as use the free barbecue area, get close with the animals on the farm, horse riding, cycling, and park golf, etc. Sapporo Satoland is approx. 30 minutes by car from Sapporo. Cruise schedules change between summer and winter; during the summer cruises depart every 30 minutes and in winter they depart every one hour. You can enjoy the abundance of nature from the lunch cruises which depart three times a day, the summer fireworks cruise, and the Nakajima Island cruise.

At Kururu no Mori you can try your hand at farming and cooking. It’s a very rewarding experience to both sow and harvest with your own hands. There are restaurants and cafes on the large farm which use freshly harvested produce. Advanced booking is required to take part in farming and cooking. Food from around Hokkaido is also available at the store which sells meat and other farm produce lovingly provided by farmers.

The ropeway connects Mt. Tengu, the symbol of Otaru, from the foot of the mountain to the summit in about four minutes. In the daytime you can see views of Otaru City looking like a miniature garden below, Otaru port and Ishikari Bay, and on clear days you can see as far Mt. Shokanbetsu and the Shakotan Peninsula. The observation deck at the summit has been awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide to Japan. In the evening, you can enjoy the beautiful night views of Otaru, said to be one of the top three night views in Hokkaido. Enjoy a nostalgic evening with views over the city like jewels sparkling in the night.

It was a very pleasant cable ride to the top of Mt Tengu. The cable car was very spacious and clean. The view was very nice too.

We choose a shorter trip of 1.5 hours. Its of good view and relaxing. We can see water falls and sea seals. Tips to all:when you go on board, take the seats on the left side of the ship.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
