This ropeway covers the 1,700 meter horizontal distance and 488 meter vertical distance between Daikanbo and Kurobedaira on the Kurobe Alpen Route. It is notable for having been built without support pylons in order to maintain the scenery and protecting the environment. It is also Japan's longest unsupported ropeway. Passengers can enjoy great 360-degree panoramic views of the Ushiro Tateyama Peaks to the East, the great slopes of Daikanbo to the west, and Kurobedaira Station and Lake Kurobe below. Depending on the timing, you may be able to see the Garve sightseeing boat that operates on Lake Kurobe. In the autumn sightseeing season, the mountains are carpeted in red autumn foliage, creating a magical scene.

Setting-off from Toyama before 08:00am to tackle the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route as far as the Kurobe Dam, before returning to Toyama, it was around 11:00am by the time I reached Daikanbo. The day...

This underground trolley bus, the only one of its kind in Japan, operates in the 3.7 kilometer-long Tateyama Tunnel that runs right under Mt. Oyama, the main peak of Mt. Tate. It is notable for how it runs on electricity provided by overhead lines, just like a train. This prevents exhaust gasses from accumulating inside the tunnel and also helps protect the natural environment. The trolley bus departs every 30 minutes and reaches the next station in about 10 minutes. Riding inside the long tunnel that connects Daikanbo Station with Murodo Station almost feels like exploring a cave. Sightseeing information is broadcast on the intercom during the ride, which increases passengers' excitement for the upcoming parts of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route.

Originally opened for operation with normal diesel buses in 1971, the tunnel was re-equipped for trolleybus operation in 1996. There are 8 buses in total (numbered 8001 ~ 8008), and seem to...

These busses operate between Bijodaira Station and Murodo Station on the Kurobe Alpen Route, a vertical distance of around 1,500 meters. Mt. Tateyama's Murodo-daira, an area that sees some of the world's heaviest snowfall, is famous for Yuki no Otani. These massive snow walls can be seen from April to June. It is a stunning sight to watch the 20 meter-tall walls pass within centimeters of the busses' windows. Many passengers got off at one of the bus stops along on the route to enjoy its many attractions. These include the area's massive Tateyama cedar trees, a viewing platform where visitors can see Shomyo Falls, and more. Informational videos that provide information on these attractions play on monitors inside the bus.

The Tateyama Highland Bus covers the 23km from Bijodaira to Murodo in 50-mins, during which it climbs almost 1,500m. On its way the bus passes initially through the densely forested lower section...

This cable car was once used to carry the materials used to build Kurobe Dam. Currently, it serves as a means of transportation between Tateyama Station and Bijodaira Station on the Kurobe Alpen Route. The cable car, which acts as the entrance to the Alpen Route, takes seven minutes to complete the 1.3 kilometer-long journey 500 meters up the mountain's surface. Passengers can enjoy watching the appearance of the forest dynamically change as the car climbs higher and higher up the mountain. In some places you can see pillar-like formations of exposed rock known as columnar jointing. Sightseeing information is broadcast on the intercom during the ride, which increases passengers' excitement for the upcoming parts of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen Route.

Arriving at Tateyama Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway you simply go upstairs to interchange with the Tateyama Cable Car. Making the return trip from Toyama to Kurobe Dam in July, I arrived the...

This glass studio a 20-minute drive from JR Toyama Station is located in the center of Toyama City, which has made glass a part of its community building initiatives. The harmony of wood and glass makes the studio a rather soothing space. Visitors can watch the studio's glass sculptors work, touch the various exhibits in the shop gallery, and even try their hand at glass blowing or making glass paperweights. The staff's careful guidance means that even a beginner can enjoy making a one-of-a-kind piece of glass art. Stopping to enjoy a drink served in a handcrafted glass at Glass Cafe Clie, the studio's cafe, is a truly special experience.

The Garve, which does a circuit around Lake Kurobe in about 30 minutes, is the only pleasure boat in Japan that operates at such a high elevation (1,448 meters at the highest point). On the Alpen Cruise, you can watch as the Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) appear before you and experience the grandeur of Kurobe’s natural scenery. The mountains are still snowy even amidst the greenery of spring and summer, and the autumn colors and winter scenery are breathtaking as well. It’s about 60 minutes from the Azumino Interchange on the Nagano Expressway or 90 minutes from the Nagano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway.

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
