  • Shogetsu Punting Station (Yanagawa Kanko Kaihatsu K.K.)

    The sightseeing boats that ply the river in Yanagawa City, Fukuoka Prefecture start from the Shogetsu Punting Station. They follow a 4.5-kilometer course to either Ohana or Okinohata and take about 70 minutes. There are several sites along the way like monuments carved with tanka poems and the flood gate will help you enjoy a relaxed trip down the river. The building beside the Shogetsu Punting Station was once home to Kaigetsuro, written about in the poem Risshu by Hakushu Kitahara. Today, it's the Shogetsu Literati Hall with a variety of literary documents on display.

    A leisurely ride in a shallow donkobune boat down a canal passing through Yanagawa, a city renowned for the beauty of its waterways. Dug as part of the construction of Yanagawa Castle, the canal twists its way through sluice gates and under bridges, revealing the elegant scenery of a former castle town during its one hour and 10-minute journey. One of the tour’s key attractions is that it provides riders with the chance to enjoy a slightly different side of Japan, such as the red brick warehouses and white namako-kabe tile and plaster walls in the late Meiji period preservation district. The stirring songs and performance provided by the boat pilot are also highlights. Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station is the closest station to the boarding dock.

    The Kitakyushu Bank Retro Line “Shiokaze” runs from the Kyushu Railway History Museum to the Kanmon Straits Mekari, and travels four stations in around 15 minutes. A blue retro railcar with two engines and two passenger cars, one can travel easily back and forth between the Mojiko retro area and Mekari area. It takes two minutes to walk from JR Mojiko Station to the Kyushu Railway History Museum Station.

    A cable car installed along the slope of Mt. Sarakura in Yahata (Yawata)-higashi Ward, Kitakyushu City. It covers the distance of 1.1 kilometers with elevation gain of 440 meters. The car's large glass windows and ceiling give riders a spectacular view of the seasonal scenery outside. It's open also in the evening in winter, so riders during this time can enjoy decorative seasonal lighting. The cable car is often used by locals and tourists alike.

    A restaurant on a boat floating in Hakata Bay in Chikkohonmachi, Hakata Ward, Fukuoka City. Here customers can choose between a buffet and two different course meals consisting of dishes prepared by chefs using choice ingredients. Live music performances and events are also regularly held on the boat and customers can enjoy a scenic ocean cruise. Also open for lunch, the restaurant attracts many customers.

    Went on an afternoon cruise in this very nice ship. The view of the waterfront is magnificent. The staff was friendly and efficient, and I stayed mostly inside because of the wind. Definitely repeat.

    This strawberry farm is located about a 10-minute drive from Yame Interchange on the the Kyushu Expressway. One of the largest strawberry farms in Kyushu, it is equipped with multi-level elevated planters. The top and bottom planters are 110 cm and 70 cm off the ground, respectively. The farm uses this system to increase the quality and yield of its strawberry crop by keeping the plants healthy and disease-free. In addition, keeping the fruit away from soil means that visitors can enjoy picking strawberries without getting their hands or clothes dirty. The farm is also wheelchair accessible thanks to its wide aisles. Guests can enjoy 12 varieties of strawberry including Amao and Benihoppe.

    This tourist strawberry farm is located about a 15-minute drive from Chikushino Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. All of the strawberries are cultivated elevated grounds at a height of around one meter by the high cultivation technique, allowing guests to enjoy picking strawberries while remaining standing. Guests can enjoy comparing a number of different varieties of strawberry including standards such as Amaou and Tochiotome as well as the farm’s own original, Lionichigo cultivar, which cannot be taken off the premises. All of the farm’s strawberries are grown with organic fertilizer and low levels of agrochemicals. Guests can also try making jam with frozen Amaou strawberries. The farm, which is by reservation only, is open from mid-December to late May.

    This tourist fruit farm is located about a 20-minute drive from Asakura Interchange. Yamandon is a corruption of the place name Yamanodo in the local Ukiha dialect. Guests can enjoy picking and eating seasonal fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, grapes, pears, and persimmons all year long. At the farm’s cafe Mugoyoka, guests can enjoy cakes or its lunch of the week. The cafe offers a selection of no fewer than 30 cakes made with plenty of seasonal fruit at any given time. We recommend enjoying them with the cafe’s blended coffee, which is made with mineral spring water.

With the raised strawberry beds you can easily pick berries while standing, and in the sweetshop facing the farm you can enjoy sweets made with freshly picked strawberries. They also offer blueberry picking from early July to late August.

Strawberry picking is offered from December to early May, and you can enjoy a 60-minute all-you-can-eat strawberry picking experience of three or four different types of strawberry (depending on the season). From February to early May you can also enjoy “mix picking” which adds cherry tomatoes and mini tomatoes (reservation required). During other seasons they offer snap pea picking and sweet potato digging.
