  • Mt. Omuro Lift

    Covered by greenery year round, 580 meter tall Mt. Omuro resembles an overturned Japanese bowl. The mountain serves as a symbol of the city of Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The Mt. Omuro Lift connects the foot of the mountain and its top, and riders can enjoy a spectacular view during the approximate six minute ride. Note that climbing the mountain on foot is prohibited. The top of the mountain is a 300 meter diameter extinct volcanic crater. Walkers along the Ohachi-meguri trail, which circles the crater, can see the Akaishi Mountains, Mt. Fuji, and the Seven Islands of Izu. Each year on the second Sunday in February, a breathtaking controlled burn is conducted on the mountain. On New Year’s Day, many visitors come to watch the sunrise from the top of the mountain, and the lift begins operation from 5:40 am on the day.

    Located in Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Ema is perhaps the largest strawberry picking facility in the prefecture. The center is only open during strawberry season, from December to around the Golden Week holidays (early May). Visitors can enjoy eating two strawberry varieties here: Akihime, a large sized strawberry cultivar originally developed in Shizuoka; and Benihoppe, a variety based on Akihime. During a picking session, visitors can eat as many ripe, sweet, and juicy strawberries as they like for 30 minutes, and condensed milk to top them with is provided for free.     A pleasure cruise which leaves from Irozaki Port in Minamiizu Town, Kamo County, Shizuoka Prefecture. Taking approximately 25 minutes, riders can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Cape Irozaki , a piece of land which juts out from the southernmost tip of the Izu Peninsula. Highlights include the craggy, cliff-dotted coastline, as well as the Irozaki Cape Lighthouse and the crystal clear waters of Hirizo Beach, through which riders can see straight down to the rocky sea bottom. Depending on the weather, the route cruise may travel to the Minokake Boulder on the eastern side of Cape Irozaki instead.

    A tourism facility located in Tsukahara Shinden, Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture where visitors can enjoy fruit picking nearly year round—strawberries from January to May, muskmelons from August to early fall, and mandarin oranges from October to December (advance reservation required). Visitors can enjoy as much delicious, fresh fruit as they like during a picking session, such as extra sweet Benihoppe and Kaorino strawberries or meaty and fragrant muskmelons (60 minute limit for melons only). There’s also an on-site restaurant which offers a superb “kama-mabushi gozen” meal packed with tasty seafood delights from Suruga Bay. Other on-site facilities include a sweets workshop, souvenir corner, and shrimp senbei cracker factory which visitors can tour.

    These are sightseeing cruise boats that depart from Nishi Izu-cho, Kamo County in Shizuoka Prefecture; cruises last for approximately 20 minutes and tour round the mysterious caves of Dogashima. The cruise tours the ever-changing ria coastline and the small islands that pepper the sea as well as the Tenso Skylight Cave where the blue sea sparkles in the light that shines through a hole in the ceiling and Sanshiro Island than can only be accessed on foot at low tide. As the cruises depart every 10–15 minutes, you can drop by anytime when you are out for a drive.

    This tourist facility located around a two-minute walk from Izu-Atagawa Station is a combined teahouse and workshop where one can try art experiences. One can choose from three experiences including clear candles, glass art, and a deco music box. They are made using sand, shells and glasswork, and even beginners and children can make something to their own taste. It takes around 60 minutes to complete a course. In the meantime others can relax in the teahouse which was an old home in Niigata that was dismantled and reconstructed. Booking isn’t necessary (though it is possible to book in advance if working to a set schedule).
