Directly in front of Shiretoko Rausu Rest Area is Nemuro Strait, and behind is Mt. Rausu, one of Japan’s top 100 mountains. The rest area is the closest rest area to Kunashiri Island of the Northern Territories and is so close you can see the island’s trees on a clear day. The rest house is located at the entrance to the Shiretoko-Odan Road on the Rausu side, on Route 335. It’s close to one of the best whale and bird watching points in Japan and from here you can check departure and latest information on the bulletin boards at the tourist information office. There are places to eat where you can try some fish from Rausu and of course you can purchase different kinds of sea related products too.

Great place to stop by to obtain some information, bathroom break, grab some drinks from the vending machine etc. Since Rausu is quite small, this is a welcoming place to pick up souvenirs or just to...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
