Hokkaido Hakodateshi Motomachi 11-13 In the old Hakodate ward public hall
In the historic Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward is the Haikara Ishokan (costume museum) which is open for about nine months from March to the second half of December. You can try on some elegant and retro-style clothing and take a commemorative photo at the building that is often called the local Rokumeikan. The Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, built in 1910, is a beautiful building blending both Japanese and Western styles. The building is a symbol of the prosperity and Western influence Hakodate gained as a trading port between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji period.

  • Handmade Music Box Workshop

    Hokkaido Hakodateshi Toyokawachou 11-17
This is the former Hakodate post office built in 1911. The building is now used as a shopping mall, “Hakodate Meiji Hall”. You can choose one of your favorite songs from a selection of about thirty and create an original only-one-in-the-world music box at the handmade music box studio on the first floor. It is approximately 20 minutes by car from Hakodate Airport or a two-minute walk from Jujigai Station on the electric train from in front of Hakodate Station.

    Hokkaido Hakodateshi Suehirochou 14-17
The “Blue Moon” sightseeing pleasure cruise operates from the end of March until the end of December. It is the first cruise in Hakodate to be recommended as part of the Hakodate waterfront development. There is a bay cruise (duration is approximately 30 minutes) and a night cruise which operates during specific periods (duration is approximately one hour). It is located approximately 25 minutes from the Hakodate Airport by car, and about 20 minutes on foot from JR Hakodate Station.

  • Ika Bay
    Travel / Tourism
Hokkaido Hakodateshi Suehirochou 24-6 Hakodate West Wharf 2F
Here, one can try their hand at making seafood products like squid products, from the Hakodate City bay area. One can take DIY courses of making squid shiokara, starting by learning how to slice a squid, or making matsumaezuke pickles using the popular gagomekelp. The foods you make can be taken home with chill packs or shipped to your house. For the DIY gift course, for making the Donan traditional ikameshi with sweet and spicy squid, uses sesame oil with the rice, giving it a slightly Asian flavor, to which uni, scallops, and other seafoods are added and eaten there on the spot

    Hokkaido Kamisogunshiriuchichou Kotanishi 99-8
854CRUISE (Yago Cruise) explores the Yago coastal area. The highpoint of the cruise, the blue grotto, was only given approval for access by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, after one year of negotiations. To be enveloped in the shimmering color of the deep blue water cave is truly a mesmerizing experience. Depending on the timing, visitors may encounter wild birds, dolphins or other creatures. The small tour boat, Yoshitsune, allows for a close dynamic experience with nature that is almost a tangible experience. (reservations required)

Hokkaido Hakodateshi Toyokawachou 11-5 BAY Hakodate inner diving
Located a five-minute walk from the Jujigai tram station, this cruise from Bay Hakodate is a 15-minute tour of Hakodate Bay. High speed boats depart from the Uchibori area by the bay. The inside of the ship is equipped with comfortable sofa seats. A seat next to the cockpit is popular with children, letting them enjoy the breeze and the power of the boat on the water. The unique opportunity to experience passing under Shichizai Bridge is a highlight. Seeing Goryokaku Tower, Hakodate Mountain, and the large ferry that connects Aomori and Hakodate from the water is also great. This all-weather pleasure boat began operating in May of 2017. It's also recommended for romantic sunsets.
  • Tsuiki Farm
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Hokkaido Kameda-gun Nanaecho Narukawa 4-297
This fruit farm spreads out at the foot of Mt. Yokotsu, where the temperature differential is large and the environment perfect for fruit. They offer fruit like strawberries, cherries, plums and blueberries grown with low agricultural chemicals and no artificial fertilizers. This farm stands out for its huge variety, which they adopted with the idea that customers could come at any time and find a surprise waiting to be picked. Strawberry picking starts from late June, cherries are in July, and apples start in September. Unusually for fruit picking farms, they don't require reservations. Their environmentally-friendly low-chemical use means they are certified Eco Farmers.

    Hokkaido Hakodate-shi Motomachi 19-7
The ropeway at Mt. Hakodate is about a ten-minute walk from the Jujigai tram stop and about ten minutes by car from Hakodate Station and right next to the ruins of the Nambujinya encampment. The gondolas are large with seating for 125 people, and have two stations, one at the base of the mountain and also at the peak observatory station. The top speed is seven meters per second and the top of the 334-meter-high mountain is reached in about three minutes. The beautiful seasonal scenery from the observatory deck at the summit and night view of Hakodate is highly regarded as the world's best and is a representative of tourism in the city. It is often crowded for an hour or two after sunset with people visiting to see the night view.

First off I highly recommend NOT going on Japanese holidays or peak season times because the crowds can get overwhelming! When they get busy expect waits of up to an hour to board, and the same to...

Hokkaido Main Areas

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
