The Hokkaido Ice Pavilion in Kamikawa, Hokkaido, at the foot of Mt. Daisetsuzan, is the world’s first and best place to experience the extreme cold. The temperature inside the ice hall is kept at -20°C which creates a completely 360° world of ice. You can experience the extreme cold of -41°C and the ‘diamond dust’ effect (where the moisture in the air is frozen) and you can also have your photo taken with the sea angel, Clione. The giant icicles, which have been 25 years in the making, are also a must-see.

The place is not big but it offers a different kind of experience. We arrived there just before lunch time and asked if they have food available, but they said no and recommended us to take a short...

You can get your creation that very day, perfect for making a memory with family or a friend. The shop also offers a glass bead arranging class in which you combine your favorite glass beads along with other parts to create a necklace or bracelet. The shop is also located a little away from the popular Otaru Canal, ensuring you can enjoy a quieter, more relaxing experience here.

We enjoyed this workshop very much. You apply stencil stickers on the glass of your choice (you pay separate fee for the glass) and eventually use a sand blaster to etch the glass. The final result...

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
