Enjoy bird watching throughout the year as well as whale and dolphin watching in summer (May to October) and drift-ice watching during the winter (January to April) on the sightseeing cruise ship, Evergreen. Cruises depart from Rausu fishing port in Shiretoko. Informative guides talk about the life and characteristics of the animals, and in winter you can see Alaska pollock fishing up close.

The company responded to our email enquiries very promptly to ensure a cruise time convenient to us. When sailed out, the staff responsible for spotting whales and dolphins was very passionate and...

The Kushiro Wetlands Norokko Train, taking roughly one hour or so, runs slowly from Kushiro Station to Toro Station. There are carriages on the train from where you can see the largest wetlands in Japan and some spectacular meandering rivers. It’s a pleasure to be able to take in the sights while ambling along at such a relaxed pace. The train runs from late April through to October every year. The Watanabe Experience Farm is located in the east of Hokkaido at the foot of Mt. Mashu. In the certified Dairy Education Farm you can have a go at milking the cows, driving a tractor around the prairie, and making butter and ice cream. The farm is close to Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. You won’t be able to miss the big, red sign with a cow on it! All of the souvenir confectionery and drink made with milk from cows on the farm is lovely.

This cattle firm welcomes visitors to experience firm related activity. Feeding cattle, milking and tasting the fresh milk/ice-cream. Good for kids to experience cattle, live and close. Of course...

    Hokkaido Kushiroshi Akanchouakankonsen 1-5-20
The Akan Sightseeing Cruise travels around Lake Akan, famous for its marimo (ball shaped green algae), from May to November. As well as the pleasure cruiser, you can also choose to ride in a motor boat, or a Japanese houseboat. The pleasure cruise takes about 85 minutes which includes a 15 minute stop so you check out the unusual looking marimo. Cruises depart from the Marimo-no-sato Pier and the Koun-no-mori Pier.

This is not exactly the most active way to spend 75 minutes but we enjoyed taking some great photos of the lake and blue skies while onboard. The highlight for me at least was stopping for 15...

  • Sightseeing Cruise Hamanasu
    Travel / Tourism
372-1 Rausu Honcho, Higashinomiya-gun, Hokkaido (waiting center)
Sightseeing Cruise Hamanasu is located about 90 minutes by bus from the Nemuro Nakashibetsu Airport. The Hamanasu sightseeing cruises operate under a ‘slow watching principle’ with cruises departing from the Hamanasu boarding area located close to their Hamanasu office in Rausu. The relaxed pace of the cruises enable passengers to observe at close quarters without threatening the sea life. In addition to the popular whale watching, you can also see the drift ice up close in winter. Cruises usually last for about two and a half to three hours. Drift ice watching is from January to the end of March.

Gojiraiwa Sightseeing conducts tours of the Shiretoko Peninsula, covering Utoro in the west to Rausu in the east. They offer a variety of tours throughout the year. They also have connections with many local hotels providing overnight tours at guest houses and pensions.

I chose to go with this boat operator for whale watching as it has a very user friendly web site and very transparent information about how many whales and dolphins were sighted each day. And I'm...

    Hokkaido Kawakamigunteshikagachou 418-66

  • Sightseeing fishing boat Tomoe II

    Hokkaido Menashigunrausuchou Matsunorichou 21-1
You can experience the natural environment of Shiretoko Rausu, a World Heritage site, on this sightseeing fishing boat. In addition to excursions to Shiretoko Cape, fishing and drift ice cruises, you can also enjoy the sea of Rausu which changes with the seasons. For the excursion course, while observing the natural beauty that can only be seen off Rausu, you will travel around points where giant beaked and minke whales appear. Although it is a matter of luck whether you can, the majestic form of Mount Rausu overwhelms all who see it. Rausu is said to be the castle town of fish, so you can aim to dynamically catch the mackerel of Rausu in fishing boats.

Hokkaido Main Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
