A café situated inside an old Japanese-style home in the Naramachi (Town of Nara) area centering on the former grounds of the Gango-ji Temple. The remodeled home still retains its old latticed and frosted glass windows, giving the café an old-fashioned yet somehow familiar atmosphere. The café’s signature menu item is the Kanakana-gohan, which comes with a variety of healthy Japanese side dishes, rice, and miso soup. A restaurant and hideaway located in the Naramachi (Town of Nara) area, renowned for its charming old-fashioned townscape, a 15 minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station. Situated inside a townhome over 140 years old, the restaurant is divided into multiple rooms, including one with a view of the inner garden, a traditional kura warehouse section, and a tatami room on the second floor. Awa serves dishes which gives diners the chance to enjoy the food culture of Nara, including home-grown Yamato vegetables, Yamato beef, and local Yamato sake. Its lunches consisting of numerous small dishes piled high on a basket are so beautiful they look like works of art. Visitors also love the fact that Awa’s dishes are not restricted to the traditional boundaries of Japanese cuisine, such as the restaurant’s rib roast steak served grilled on a porcelain plate. A “yoshoku” Japanese-style Western food restaurant situated inside an old townhome in Kunodo Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Haru has an old-fashioned look appropriate to the ancient capital of Nara, including a Japanese garden and sunken hearth. This famous restaurant serves old-fashioned yoshoku made with local specialty products such as select Yamato beef and Yamato pork. Some of the most popular items on the menu are the juicy hamburg steak and huge wild fried prawns with head. Women love Haru’s Hayashi rice topped with a crisply breaded pork cutlet. The inside of the restaurant has the quiet atmosphere of an old-fashioned Japanese home, making it easy to enjoy a quiet meal at your leisure.

A popular spot to enjoy a lunch or take a break in between a walk, Yotsuba has window-side counter seating as well as tatami mat seating where you can take your time with your meal. The café’s chicken, special curry with brown rice, sandwiches, daily special cakes, and other menu items are handmade with a focus on simplicity and are well-reviewed.

You’ll find this coffee shop inside the “Nara Orient” townhouse, built at the end of the Edo period in the “Naramachi” area of Nishinoshinya Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. The most popular dish is the “chagayu (tea porridge) meal” made with roasted green tea or azuki bean tea. There are many other unique local items as well, such as side dishes made with locally grown vegetables and desserts. The Japanese courtyard inside gives the place a traditional feel. The original sweets are popular too, such as the specially made “shiratama ice cream” and “warabimochi” (bracken-starch dumplings).

大人の日帰り旅関西版と言う雑誌に紹介されていたので、訪問。元々米問屋だった建物を活用して飲食店に。奥には蔵を活用したバーも夜は開店するとの話しでした。茶がゆを頂きました。1500円で数十円お釣り来ましたが、話のタネで次はリピート無いですね。特に旨いと言う訳でも無く、高いですね。

This is a vegetable cuisine restaurant offering mainly Yamato vegetables, located in Nakanoshinya Town, Nara City. For lunch they offer Yasai Biyori, a set of vegetable cuisine using Yamato vegetables from a contract garden and kodaimai (wild rice), the Hidamari which comes with Yamato beef, and Hinata that comes with either char or prawn. They also offer a popular Yasai Kaiseki (vegetable course) full of vegetables from start to finish (reservations needed by the previous day). This can also be made into a set with Yamato beef, char, Yamato pork or Yamato chicken.

Gen is a soba noodle restaurant located in Fukuchiin Town, Nara City. At lunchtime you can try their fragrant Juwari-soba (100% buckwheat flour), although they only make 40 bowls of this soul satisfying soba each day. You’ll need to book a table for the evening and it’s only available for just two groups. A course of soba noodles is served for guests lucky enough to get a table. This Michelin starred restaurant is particularly well known.

平日予約せず行ってみたところ、大半が予約しているようで、偶然にも空いていたのですぐに入れた。田舎蕎麦は香りが良く、そのままでも、塩でも美味しく、空腹なら2枚は食べられそう。

ならまちにある素敵なカフェに行ってきました。複合施設の中の一番奥のお店です森の中を進んでいくような雰囲気です。店内はジャムやお紅茶などの物販コーナーとカフェコーナーがあります。お食事はトーストやサンドイッチなどの軽食メニューのみですが素材を生かした美味しいトースト類です。店の外観に素敵なお花が飾られてきて素敵でした。

抹茶かき氷を頼むのに、白いかき氷に抹茶をトッピングしなければならず、かき氷だけで1320円かかります。高いので二人でシェアしようとしたら、ワンオーダー制なので一人一つ注文してくださいと言われ、抹茶ラテ1100円を追加しなければなりませんでした。普通のかき氷にあんこと白玉2個付いてますが、台湾かき氷の様にふわふわでもなく、コスパ最低です。店員の対応も少し横柄に感じました。次はないなと思いました。

Nara Areas

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
