This morning market in Hakodate has a fishing pond with squid in it. The large oval fish tank inside the market is filled with live squid swimming about vigorously. To fish, pay at the shop front and then wait your turn to use the provided fishing pole and catch yourself a squid. One of the most exciting things about the fishing tank is that once caught, the squid will retaliate by shooting out jets of sea water. As the value of squid fluctuates, so too does the price of fishing for squid here. You can have the squid you catch processed right then and there to eat as sashimi.

The market, located five minutes away from JR Otaru Station, is vibrant and highly popular with local customers and tourists. The prototype was created in the early Showa era around 1930. Afterward, it took its current form in 1968, vibrant with nearly 30 stores in a building with a retro feel. In addition to the fishery and agricultural products unique to Hokkaido, there are many processed foods using local seasonal ingredients, fresh seafood like sashimi and dried fish, and also stores shipping locally. Besides that, the lineup has a rich variety, including food, household products and fresh flowers.

Stop by on the way from Sapporo to Otaru. A small local market with friendly hawker. Sells fruits, vege, seafood, fried/cooked food and groceries. Surprisingly the toilet is sooo clean, thumbs up!

All the branches have a wide selection of sweets and local sake from across Hokkaido, so it’s a great place to do all the souvenir shopping. All the classic confections like Shiroi Koibito, Rokkatei, Royce’, Jaga Pokkuru, and Hanabatake Bokujo are on sale. The shop has English and Chinese speaking staff making it easy for tourists to do their shopping. The stone exterior of the shop fits in nicely to the retro look of Otaru’s streets.

MOOの中にある土産物店の一つでした。どの店舗も似たような売れ筋商品が並んでおり、同じ商品ならどこで購入しても同じようでした。因みに同店の陳列棚にはこぼれ落ちそうな程の商品が並んでおり目移りしたものの、バラマキ用に適した菓子類も沢山並んでいました。

Hokkaido Asahikawa-shi 2 Jodori 13- Hidari 2-go

A long-standing taiyaki pastry shop located at the 2-Jodori 13-Chome intersection. Ever since their opening in 1951 they've continued to make taiyaki with the same unchanging flavor. The shop's specialty, well known to the locals, is their Banana-yaki. It's a banana shaped pastry stuffed with a salty white bean paste with just the perfect amount of salt to enhance the sweetness. The texture of the sweet starts to change after just five minutes so they don't prebake them and hand them over freshly made. If a bit of time has passed, they can be brought back to their crispy state with a little warming in an oven-toaster or frypan.

雑誌に紹介されていたので、通りすがりで訪問。バナナ焼きの文字で利用したが、期待は大いに外れ。たい焼きの形がバナナになっていて、中の餡が白あんというだけの大したことないもの。格段に美味しいわけでもない。予約なしだという他の客の扱いがかなりひどかったのだけが記憶に。

Hokkaido Asahikawa-shi Asahimachi 1-jo 9-689-23

The confectioner which sells the Ohirune Pudding, a sweet that took first place in popularity contests at both Tokyo Dessert Republic and Purin Dendo 2006 held in Kobe. Their pudding is carefully made using ingredients from Hokkaido and ingredients are brought in from all over Hokkaido for testing. Their creamy smooth pudding is the pride of the shop and really expresses the flavor of their eggs. In addition to this location you can also find their products at their Toko branch in Toko 1-Jo 5-Chome as well as their online shop. Other popular menu items are their Asahikawa Souffle which melts in the mouth and their Angel's Smile creamy cheese tart.

旭川駅から車で15分くらい、北海道教育大学旭川校の近くですね。こじんまりしたお店ですが、こちらが本店なんですね。エチュードと言えば、お昼ねプリンが有名ですが、今回はケーキを頂きました。レアチーズケーキを頂きましたが、濃厚なクリームチーズにベリーのソースがマッチしてかなりの美味しさでした。次回は他のケーキも試してみたいです。
