Ningle Terrace is a shopping area located in the forest adjacent to the New Furano Prince Hotel. Ningle appears in the book of the same name written by So Kuramoto and refers to the 15 centimeter-tall character known as The Wise Man of the Forest who lived in the forests of Hokkaido in the past. The line of small cottages in the forest with a collection of a variety of craft shops is like getting lost in a picture book. During the day, you can enjoy bathing in the forest while after sunset you can walk the romantic forest paths which are illuminated.

Dubbed the northernmost souvenir shop in Japan, Kashiwaya is located in Cape Soya at the northernmost tip of mainland Japan. The big triangle shape at the entrance, based on the monument at Cape Soya, is a characteristic feature of the shop. Inside the large store you’ll find a variety of goods such as sweets and sake, accessories and things made of wood and key holders. The most popular thing for people to buy is the certificate declaring you’ve made it to the northernmost part of Japan. You can get the date and time of your arrival printed on the certificate. What is more, in the adjacent ice hall you can get to touch a real iceberg, which is not something you get to do every day!

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
