    Hokkaido Sapporoshi Chuou-ku Minamisanjouhigashi 1 from 2-chome
The fish market is located in the center of Sapporo. With a continuous history since the Meiji period, it is still popular among locals as a kitchen. There are about 50 shops offering a wide range of goods, including fruit and souvenirs in addition to fresh seafood. The free samples that can be eaten at the shops are also fun. In the surrounding area, there are old-fashioned shops as well as new cafes and Italian and other stores, making it popular as a lively gourmet food spot.

This fish market was quite disappointing, as it is very small when compared to other fish markets in Japan like in Tokyo and Kyoto. Not really worth a visit, unless you just want to buy some seafood.

This market is an outdoor market next to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market located ten minutes from Sapporo Station by car. They get very fresh food from the Central Wholesale Market every day and sell them to the locals and visitors at very reasonable prices. There are around 60 shops and restaurants which include sushi, seafood bowls, ramen and oysters. They also provide next-day delivery for purchases within and outside Hokkaido, which is reassuring when choosing souvenirs.

    Hokkaido Kushiroshi Kuroganechou 13-25
Washou Ichiba Market was built as a people’s kitchen in 1954 and is one of the most historic indoor markets in Kushiro. The name came from the lively calls of “Wasshoi, Wasshoi” as well as the expression “Trade with Harmony”. There are about 60 shops in the market which sell fresh fish, fruit, meat, snacks, tea and flowers. Also, there are sushi restaurants and cafes. Choosing your favorite seafood to make your own original seafood bowl (“Katte-don”) is also popular.

You would expect that every major city in Hokkaido would have one of these markets but they are actually not as common. I prefer this place to Sapporo morning market and its definitely better than...

  • Hakodate Ekini Market

    Hokkaido Hakodateshi Wakamatsuchou 9-19
This morning market in Hakodate has a fishing pond with squid in it. The large oval fish tank inside the market is filled with live squid swimming about vigorously. To fish, pay at the shop front and then wait your turn to use the provided fishing pole and catch yourself a squid. One of the most exciting things about the fishing tank is that once caught, the squid will retaliate by shooting out jets of sea water. As the value of squid fluctuates, so too does the price of fishing for squid here. You can have the squid you catch processed right then and there to eat as sashimi.

    Hokkaido Otarushi Shintomichou 12-1
The market, located five minutes away from JR Otaru Station, is vibrant and highly popular with local customers and tourists. The prototype was created in the early Showa era around 1930. Afterward, it took its current form in 1968, vibrant with nearly 30 stores in a building with a retro feel. In addition to the fishery and agricultural products unique to Hokkaido, there are many processed foods using local seasonal ingredients, fresh seafood like sashimi and dried fish, and also stores shipping locally. Besides that, the lineup has a rich variety, including food, household products and fresh flowers.

Stop by on the way from Sapporo to Otaru. A small local market with friendly hawker. Sells fruits, vege, seafood, fried/cooked food and groceries. Surprisingly the toilet is sooo clean, thumbs up!

With its antique Showa period atmosphere, this lively market offers fresh caught seafood, fried kamaboko fish cake, meats, and other delicacies from early morning. The market fish seller Nagata Fishmonger is open Sundays as well, making it a hit with tourists looking for souvenirs.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
