There are about 50 shops offering a wide range of goods, including fruit and souvenirs in addition to fresh seafood. The free samples that can be eaten at the shops are also fun. In the surrounding area, there are old-fashioned shops as well as new cafes and Italian and other stores, making it popular as a lively gourmet food spot.

Lots of Fresh Seafood! a Lot cleaner than tsukiji fish market and not too crowded. Since we came in winter, theres lots of crabs on bargain and cooked on the spot.

This market is an outdoor market next to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market located ten minutes from Sapporo Station by car. They get very fresh food from the Central Wholesale Market every day and sell them to the locals and visitors at very reasonable prices. There are around 60 shops and restaurants which include sushi, seafood bowls, ramen and oysters. They also provide next-day delivery for purchases within and outside Hokkaido, which is reassuring when choosing souvenirs.

The Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Markets) are regarded as the face of Hakodate and it is said that the market began when nearby farmers began selling fruit and vegetables in 1945 after the war. After that the markets were moved several times until settling in the present location in 1956. The markets became even more popular with the addition of shops selling seafood such as crab and salmon with food and drink shops as well. Now about 5,000 people visit the market every day. It is best to visit as early in the morning as you can as popular items are sometimes sold out.

Washou Ichiba Market was built as a people’s kitchen in 1954 and is one of the most historic indoor markets in Kushiro. The name came from the lively calls of “Wasshoi, Wasshoi” as well as the expression “Trade with Harmony”. There are about 60 shops in the market which sell fresh fish, fruit, meat, snacks, tea and flowers. Also, there are sushi restaurants and cafes. This morning market in Hakodate has a fishing pond with squid in it. The large oval fish tank inside the market is filled with live squid swimming about vigorously. To fish, pay at the shop front and then wait your turn to use the provided fishing pole and catch yourself a squid.
