  • Karato Market
    Yamaguchi Pref. Shimonosekishi Karatochou 5-50
Karato Market is located in Shimonoseki City. Local fishermen and farmers bring their fish, seafood and agricultural produce here to sell it themselves. The Market is a great place for visitors to buy fresh fish caught that same day, and fresh seasonal vegetables. There is also a cafeteria selling sushi and Kaisen-don (rice topped with seafood). The “Iki-iki Bakan-gai” food festival is held at the Karato Market between 10:00 and 15:00 on Fridays and Saturdays and between 8:00 and 15:00 on Sundays and public holidays; this is a lively event with large numbers of people enjoying fish dishes and seafood sold at stalls erected in the Market.

In addition, there is ""Ban-nou-Juku"" where visitors can try their hands at farming, and the facility is visited by many people from afar especially during holidays."

A product hall with a white chalk exterior and a semi-circular eaves. They display and sell local Kaminoseki produce, prepared marine products, and folk crafts. Their dried flounder known as denbera, debira, or debera depending on the region is a winter food tradition that has not changed since ancient times. Typically, it's wrapped in newspaper and pounded, then the softened flesh is roasted. In addition to selling Kaminoseki local favorites like tempura and dried hijiki, they also take orders for kokko fruit and Japanese tiger prawns on a seasonal basis.

"A specialty shop with a large green roof on National Route 188. It sells specialty items like locally grown produce and prepared agricultural and marine products. Produce such as spinach, edible chrysanthemums, onions, and lettuce are produced in accordance with the original ""Safe Produce"" guidelines of Hirao Town. Locals flock to the store as soon as it opens in search of safe and reliably good produce that is strictly managed with a star system. Their popular handmade sweets and freshly made lunches often sell out before noon."

Yamaguchi Areas

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
