  • Hime Hijiki Salt House
    Travel / Tourism
Hiroshima Kure-shi Shimokamagaricho Kaji Ke Hama Chiku-ku
This agriculture, forestry, and fisheries activity facility is located adjacent to Kajigahama Beach, a beautiful stretch of white sand and green pines. Here you can make Hime Hijiki Salt, a natural variety of salt which contains an abundance of calcium and other minerals. This salt is made by hand by adding hime hijiki (hijiki seaweed buds) to natural seawater from Shimo-kamagari and boiling it to concentrate, which draws out the innate flavors of the ingredients used and results in a salt that has a mild and slightly sweet flavor. You can put your salt in a Hime Hijiki Salt plastic product bag to take home as a souvenir.
  • Fukumoto Ferry
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Onomichi-shi Tsuchido 1- Otsu 792-26 Chisaki , Onomichi-shi
This ferry is known to locals as the “One Yen Poppo.” There are three ferry routes in total operating on the Onomichi Strait between Onomichi and Mukaishima Island, but this one is the oldest. Customers note that the ferry offers excellent access, adjoining a cycling road on the Mukaishima Island side and being close to the station on the Onomichi side. Also the most reasonably-priced of the three ferries, it is still highly popular and is widely used by locals as part of everyday life in addition to tourists.
  • Fukuyama Tomonoura Sea Bream Net Fishing
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Fukuyama-shi Tomocho Sensuijima Island
This traditional fishing method has been practiced for some 400 years. A veritable early summer tradition in the Tomo-cho area, visitors can observe the fishing from sightseeing boats. As six fishing vessels head out to sea and before they start fishing, the Tairyobushi, a stirring song and dance performance incorporating taiko drums, is performed in offering to Otohime, envoy of Benzaiten, to pray for a safe voyage and a big catch. Afterwards, in a spectacle observers are sure never to forget, the fishing vessels bring in their nets just as they did in ancient times, capturing schools of fish. The practice was stopped temporarily due to World War II but was revived in 1949. In 2015, it was designated an Intangible Folk-Cultural Property by Fukuyama City.
  • Heisei Irohamaru Ferry
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Fukuyama-shi Tomochotomo 623-5
This municipal ferry is modeled after the Iroha-maru, the historic steamship of the Kaientai trading company which was led by samurai reformer Sakamoto Ryoma. The ferry connects the dock situated along Prefectural Route 22 with Sensui Island about six kilometers out to sea. The ride takes around 5 minutes one way, and there is an informational sign on the ship about Sakamoto as well as a commemorative photograph area, ensuring your trip will be over before you know it. The ferry leaves around three times every hour during the day and bustles with tourists on weekends and consecutive holidays.

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
