This is a long-established soba restaurant located approximately 10 minutes on foot from Hakone-Yumoto Station on the approach to the Yumoto-bashi Bridge. They are famous for their Japanese yam soba noodles made only from buckwheat flour, locally-produced eggs and Japanese yams without using water and flour, and it is such a popular shop that lines form during peak time. Popular menu items are their Seiro-soba, unchanged since long ago, and Teijo-soba which is topped with grated Japanese yams. Their soba is exquisite, full of sweetness and the original flavor of the soba, and it is known for its noodles that do not soften out even after time passes thanks to the use of Japanese yam as a thickener.

Located along the approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, Dankazura Kosuzu is a charming soba and warabi mochi shop with a swaying willow and looks like it could appear in a historic drama. The shop’s soba is springy and smooth. The warabi mochi starch dumplings are made with rare domestically grown bracken starch, and their chewy yet melt-in-your-mouth texture has delighted many tourists. The shop’s warabi mochi can also be brought home as a souvenir.

This soba noodle restaurant, located towards the back of Takidori in Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture, is famous as it has been covered many times in the media including in magazines. Each day, it serves only 15 portions of its popular 20/80 flour/buckwheat flour ratio noodles from carefully selected buckwheat seeds stone-ground with their shells on. The Seiro 10/90 flour/buckwheat flour ratio noodles in which buckwheat seeds are ground without the shell are sweeter and you will be able to enjoy the original flavour of the buckwheat. The noodles dipped in duck soup using duck breast from Aomori are also popular.

This is a famous shop in a spot next to the shore of Lake Ashi in Hakone Town, Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture, and it has even been featured on television. Here one can enjoy painstakingly handmade soba noodles with specially picked ingredients such as brown buckwheat sourced from a contract farm. The Juwari Soba (“100 Percent Soba”) is a popular dish limited to just 20 per day and often sells out soon after the restaurant opens. Other popular menu items include “Seiro” with the original flavor of the soba, “Tenseiro” with the addition of freshly-fried tempura, and dishes that represent the different Hakone seasons including Sakura Oroshi Soba in summer and Jinenjo Soba (“Japanese Yam Soba”) in winter.

This soba restaurant is about a five-minute walk from Togendai Station on the Hakone Ropeway. The authentic Japanese interior offers a wonderful view of Lake Ashi and a subdued atmosphere in which you can enjoy your meals. The soba is made with Hokkaido stone-ground grade-one flour and is completely organic, allowing for a truly natural taste. The thin noodles complement the dried bonito and mackerel soup stock perfectly. Among the options are “sanroku soba,” made with amazingly flavorful “sanroku pork,” and “tennen ebi (natural shrimp) tenzaru” soba. The soba filled with Izu seaweed is another popular choice.

This place offers great noodles right next to the lake in a traditional manner. If you are looking for a good place to eat, with relatively low prices and a traditional setting, definitely stop by!

    Kanagawa Kamakura-shi Komachi 1-7-6
This soba noodle restaurant stands on Komachi-dori Street in Kamakura City. Established in 1964, here customers can eat country-style soba noodles made by the hands of the Nagano-born owner. The restaurant's noodles are primarily made with buckwheat flour from Nagano and have the distinct firmness and flavor of country-style noodles; customers can also enjoy sobayu, the flavorful water used to boil the noodles. The firm, chewy noodles go great with the restaurant's slightly sweet tare dipping sauce. The restaurant offers both hot and cold soba noodles, but the owner particularly recommends the tororo soba noodles with grated yam; the springy noodles pick up the grated yam well. Noodle-making demonstrations are also held at the front of the establishment, and you can watch if your timing is right.

Its a really small place on the side street from kouachi dori. Usually they have long lines but it moves real fast. Our kids love this place.

The specialty of the restaurant is their soba served with grated yam. The mixture of the strong flavor and sticky texture of the yam with the smooth easy to swallow noodles is very popular.

Kanagawa Areas

around-area-map

Kanagawa prefecture acts as an extension of the Tokyo metropolis that spills over into coastal towns, most notably Yokohama city, heavily populated and known for its Chinatown and seaside attractions. Just the right distance for a day trip out of Tokyo, Kanagawa is home to some of Tokyo’s most accessible beaches, including around Kamakura, best known for its Big Buddha. Visitors can also travel a little farther afield for a weekend at Hakone onsen town.
