    Okayama Pref. Maniwashi Hiruzenshimofukuda 438
This is a restaurant located on National Route 482 in Hiruzen-shimofukuda, Maniwa City. They serve mainly the Hiruzan Yakisoba (fried noodles), unique to Hiruzen, using chicken meat and a miso sauce, as well as set meals and curry, and udon noodles. In addition, Japanese-style fried chicken which is juicy fried chicken thigh meat cut in to large pieces strongly seasoned, is becoming as popular as Hiruzan Yakisoba.

This soba shop is about a 10-minute walk from JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station. The quiet shop is full of character, and is housed in the remodeled noble lodging used by officials of the Miura domain. The first floor features tatami-style floor seating partitioned by screens, and the second floor has a few private rooms for groups. The cuisine here features vegetables grown in the shop's garden, and centers on soba dishes like Zarusoba in a basket, Shirusoba noodle soup, and Soba Teishoku meal sets, but we also recommend the tempura or somen noodles.
  • Bukkake Furuichi Naka Store
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Okayama Kurashiki-shi Achi 2-3-23
Located just a five-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station. This is the oldest flagship shop in the Furuichi chain of udon noodle restaurants which is famous for Kurashiki's specialty Bukkake Udon. Bukkake Udon is a dish with a gentle mouthfeel yet springy texture to the noodles served in a strong salty-sweet broth. It's a highly recommended standard menu focusing on its four component parts, water, salt, broth, and flour. Also highly recommended is their Kamatama dish which mixes freshly boiled udon noodles with raw egg and shaved dried bonito. The soft and springy texture of the udon mixes with the egg and pairs perfectly with the taste and flavor of their special soy sauce.

A 10-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station. This long-standing soba restaurant is located near the entrance to Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. Local Okayama industrialist Ohara Soichiro wanted authentic Shinshu (present day Nagano) soba and this restaurant has been making Shinshu Fuji-style Soba ever since. The buckwheat is ground with the husk still attached and the resulting soba noodles retain the original black color and strong scent and gain a springy texture. Their specialty Yam Soba offers a traditional flavor inherited from their predecessors. Another popular dish is their Tenmori which was devised by the second-generation owner of the shop. It's a great way to try the ten-zaru style of soba with cold soba noodles topped with two pieces of fried shrimp tempura as well as shiso leaves, shishito green peppers, and other toppings.

I got a table right away by the kind staff. However the bowl of soba that I ordered had a weird flavor, too strong, and the texture was strange, sticky and rubbery. Not a very good experience. I...

Okayama Areas

around-area-map

Overshadowed by Hiroshima to the west and the Kansai region to the east, Okayama is an easy spot to miss but a nature-rich gem where the Seto Inland Sea laps at its toes and peach and grape farms complete its interior. One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Koraku-en in Okayama city is well worth a visit before progressing to Kurashiki, where preserved wooden Edo buildings line the picturesque canal.
