Okinawa Pref. Miyakojimashi Gusukube Sunagawa 975
Maruyoshi Shokudo is a long-established Okinawan Soba noodles restaurant located on National Highway 390 in Sunagawa, Gusukube, Miyako-jima City (between the intersection of National Highway 390 and Prefectural Highway 190 and the intersection of National Highway 390 with the Prefectural Highway 201). The restaurant’s Okinawan Soba noodles, which combine a thick pork-based broth with a touch of garlic with noodles that are boiled to a firm consistency, have been popular on Miyako-jima for many years; the restaurant is also famous for the brown sugar ice-candy that is served after the noodles (in the case of small-sized portions of Miyako Soba noodles, only for children).

We were lucky to be the last customers! And so lucky we could eat their number one soba dish! Meat is very tasty and portions are very reasonable. Mainly occupied by local! We got to try the ice...

    Okinawa Pref. Yaeyamaguntaketomichou Taketomi 101-1
Founded in 1975, Takenoko is one of the longest-established Yaeyama Soba Noodle restaurants on Taketomi Island. It is also one of the most popular restaurants on the island, with queues often forming at lunchtime. The restaurant’s signature dish is Yaeyama Soba Noodles, featuring a full-bodied yet clear and uncomplicated broth. Takenoko also makes its own special “Kuchu” spice (Koregusu spice) using locally-grown red chillies, which is available for sale as a souvenir gift.

As expected, food was delicious. They have an English menu which helps a lot since they could only understand a few English words. We took the seats at the balcony since we wanted to take in the...

Tamaya soba noodles is an Okinawa soba restaurant in Nanjo City along Prefectural Road 77. The noodles are firm and thin, and the popular light broth is made from pork bone and dried bonito in a lengthy preparation process. The soba is topped with boned rib, soki (pork rib with the bone), pig's feet, and others. There are three sizes, from small to extra large, and you can customize your toppings with ingredients such as mugwort.

Very casual Okinawa soba restaurant with one of those automatic machines where you put in money and make your selection. The interior is split in two:one side with Tatami and low tables, and the...

    Okinawa Pref. Nahashi Omoromachi 4-9-11
This restaurant specializes in Okinawa soba. Based on the concept of “harmony,” the soup is made using a painstaking process that takes two days, and it is full of the flavor of dried bonito and packed with savory flavor and richness. There are many types of soba available, including “hon-soki suba” (Okinawan soba with stewed pork spare ribs) and the meat-packed “kenpa suba.” There’s also a “children’s set” available on the side menu, which is perfect for families. As a special lunch promotion, whenever you order soba (with the exception of the mini soba), you can receive either “jushi” (Okinawan paella) or rice for free.

Very good food at a reasonable price. The pork spare ribs were tender enough to pull off the bone with chopsticks. The rolls on the left side of the picture were open at the bottom and filled with a...

Teianda is a specialty Okinawan soba noodle shop located in Tenkushintoshin with a stylish exterior of glass walls. You can enjoy several types of soba noodles such as soki (stewed pork spareribs) soba noodles, tebichi (pig’s feet) soba noodles as well as authentic Okinawan soba noodles. The exclusive homemade noodles use unbleached wheat which is allowed to settle for two days. The fragrant noodles have a springy texture and go well with the soup. You can choose from two types of noodles: thick or thin.

This is one of the best hand-made Okinawan noodle we have had during our stay in Okinawa and well-frequented by locals. Both the chilled mugwort soba and the traditional hot Okinawan soba served in a...

    Okinawa Ishigaki-shi Okawa 213
This venerable Yaeyama soba restaurant in the Euglena Mall shopping district in Okawa, Ishigaki City has been in business for more than 90 years. Its sign bears a claim of the restaurant's status as the originator of Yaeyama soba, the local style of rounded wheat noodles. Their Yaeyama soba, which has tasted the same way for decades, is notable for a soup made exclusively from pork. Guests can enjoy their soba together with a serving of jushi (Okinawan pilaf).

This restaurant offers specially prepared soba and udon noodles. The inviting atmosphere means that even customers who are alone can visit with ease. It has been featured on TV programs and was chosen as one of Naha City’s recommended “health-promoting establishments.” The main draw is the “Mitsumaru soba,” which features broth with shiitake mushrooms, “oi” bonito, and kelp. The noodles are thin and firm, and the dish comes with nutritionally balanced toppings as well.

Okinawa Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
