A Buddhist vegetarian cuisine restaurant located inside the Tenryu-ji Temple’s garden, a World Heritage Site, in Kyoto City. Buddhist vegetarian cuisine was originally developed for monks who were prohibited from eating meat. It is made without any animal-derived products, instead using highly seasonal ingredients with a focus on vegetables and emphasizing the “five flavors,” the “five colors,” and the “five laws.” The restaurant offers three courses which change with the seasons—a 3,000 yen course, 5,000 yen course, and 7,000 yen course. No matter which course you choose, you will be able to enjoy delicate flavors that make maximum use of the individual ingredients involved.
  • Yudofu Sagano
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Ukyou-ku Sagatenryujisusukinobabachou 45
This is a boiled tofu restaurant near the grounds of Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama, Kyoto, around a five-minute walk from Randen Line’s Arashiyama Station. The pure Japanese sukiya-style architecture that stands in the quietness like a tea-ceremony arbor along with the wide Japanese garden is one of its attractive charms. There are casual counter seats for single diners, tatami room seats for families and groups, and even outdoor seats where one can enjoy the garden at proximity. The “Yudofu” on offer comes with 10 dishes including Kyoto traditional Saga boiled tofu, Kyoto vegetable tempura, gomadofu (crushed sesame seeds boiled in water and chilled like tofu), and deep-fried tofu. The “melt in your mouth” healthy tofu flavor is extremely popular with more elderly diners too.

The Seizan Sodo offers a boiled tofu set meal in the tatami study of the Myochiin, a sub-temple of the Tenryuji. The tofu is from Morika, a venerable Saga tofu shop.

Stumbled on to this place and so thankful we did. Sit on the floor kind of restaurant with traditional sliding doors and a garden surrounding the building. Really relaxing and mellow.

The Former Manshu Residence, located a three minute walk from Keifuku Arashiyama Station, was once the home and studio of Meiji period painter Kawamura Manshu. Matsugae is located on the grounds of this mansion which once served as a gathering space for cultured persons like Kitaoji Rosanjin. The offers two types of rich, flavorful tofu—buckwheat tofu and matcha green tea tofu. These are served in an alternating, checkerboard pattern. There are two other establishments on the grounds—the Arashiyama Yoshimura soba restaurant and the Nunoasobi Yoshimra kimono and Japanese knickknack shop.

Honestly, we had high expectation for this restaurant. We ordered 1 seasonal menu and 1 tofu set. To be honest, it was so torturing to finish all the food. Everything tasted the same and so bland...

"Produced by Arashiyama Benkei, a long-established ryokan with a first-class Japanese restaurant, this restaurant specializes in Kyoto's traditional home-style cooking ""obanzai"". It serves a colorful ""gozen"" (meal set) with obanzai using an abundance of seasonal ingredients and vegetables from Kyoto, as well as ""nama-fu dengaku"" (a fresh gluten cake baked and served on a skewer) with a special homemade miso flavor. The restaurant also serves Kyoto's locally brewed beer and sake. The sales space offers a wide range of original souvenirs, including ""yuba"" (delicacy made from the skin of gently boiled soybean milk) and ""Saikyo-zuke (pickled in sweet Kyoto-style miso) roast beef"", which are popular among tourists."

Wanted to try this place but couldn’t find it right away. It is upstairs. Got the set menu. We got the yuba porridge which was a kind of congee almost, and delicious (instead of the rice). Fun and...

This restaurant is in Kyoto Ward, Kyoto City. Here guests dine on delicious udon and soba noodles while getting in touch with the natural scenery of Kyoto. It is located about half way along the stone steps leading to Jingoji Temple, so temple patrons often stop here for some refreshment.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
