There’s also a paid fish market tour available that requires reservations.

Founded in 1866, Tenkatsu is a Japanese restaurant with a long history. In the restaurant’s ground floor area, there is a large fishpond in the middle of the floor, with counter-style seating arranged round it. The second floor has quiet private rooms for entertaining, while the third floor has a banquet hall capable of accommodating a large number of guests; Tenkatsu is thus able to meet the needs of a wide variety of different customers. The menu features Japanese cuisine, with a particular focus on fresh fish and seafood from the Seto Inland Sea. Diners can ask to have one of the fish swimming in the fishpond cooked for them.

This restaurant is unusual for its central fish pond where patrons can choose their dinner including eel and pufferfish. Food is good from set menu. Menus are in English and easy to understand...

  • Maimaitei

    Kagawa Pref. Takamatsushi Higashitamachi 18-5
Roughly eight minutes on foot from Kawaramachi Station, this restaurant features local Sanuki cuisine. The traditional local cuisine is recreated by Mr. Ryushi Matsuoka using only the day’s freshest ingredients from Sanuki’s abundant harvest. The first floor has counter seating and seating around a stove, while the second floor has tables for relaxing under andon lamp lighting, and Japanese-style rooms. You can order course meals with local sake, or order a la carte to get the famous “kankan zushi”, or “kawazakana no hirarani” —slowly simmered over three days.

About a five minute walk from the bus stop at Akasaka, Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture. This restaurant is one where you can enjoy richly diverse and creative dishes. Standard lunch options include the three-portion bento box, with the three-level Nonoka meal. A kids’ menu is also available. There are course meals in the evening.

This is a good place to stop while sightseeing at Shikoku's Yashima or Seto Inland Sea National Park. It has a restaurant and a souvenir shop with a large selection of Sanuki specialties, noted goods, folk crafts, and special merchandise. Adjacent to the Shishi-no-reigan Lookout, it offers a superb view of the Seto area you can take in while you dine. It's been selected as one of Japan’s 100 best sunset destinations, and the night view is great too.

This restaurant is famous for its chicken served on the bone and topped with daikon radish sprouts. The restaurant's large menu includes meat from adult birds, meat from young birds, grilled chicken skin, and chicken tsukune meatloaf. The restaurant is decorated simply and has a friendly atmosphere. The chicken on the bone is cooked with plenty of chicken fat and spicy seasonings are kept to a minimum, meaning even children can enjoy the restaurant's delicious chicken.

Goyashiki is a typical example of a wealthy farmhouse in this region. Notable for both its age and architecture, it's a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Valuable features include the design of the main building and detached rooms, the four-legged front gate, the yakuimon garden gate, and the six storehouses on the grounds. Today Goyashiki is a restaurant serving elegant kaiseki course cuisine and local Sanuki fare including hand-made Sanuki udon noodles.

The experience is definitely five star, though the food does not live up to the experience. Set on the grounds of an old manor house with kimono clad attendants, you feel transported back in time. To...

This Japanese pub gets great reviews for items made with local Kagawa ingredients. Guests love their Sanuki Sanchiku: Sanuki beef, Sanuki Yumebuta pork, and Sanuki Sanchiku Cochin chicken. Everything on the menu is fantastic, including their multi-course meals, combination platters, and traditional Kagawa fare. They close as soon as their main dishes run out, so it's best to go early.

  • Okonomiyaki Fumiya
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Kagawa Pref. Takamatsushi Kawaramachi 2-2-35
This veteran okonomiyaki pancake shop was founded in 1952. People say it's the best spot for okonomiyaki in Takamatsu. Grilled with lots of beef lard for a crispy texture reminiscent of fried food, they're perfect with just some special okonomiyaki sauce rather than the usual range of toppings like nori seaweed, dried bonito shavings, and mayonnaise.
  • Kishun

    Kagawa Pref. Takamatsushi Megichou 453
Operating as a beach clubhouse on the first floor and as a guesthouse on the second floor, this is one of only a few lodging facilities on the island of Megijima which is open year round. The establishment's dinners consist of hearty and visually appealing fresh seafood delights that surprise with both their extravagance and flavor. The clubhouse on the first floor serves shaved ice, curry, and other snacks and light meals.

"A Japanese diner style restaurant where customers can enjoy dishes made with olives, an abundance of which are grown on Shodoshima Island where the restaurant is located. The restaurant makes use of fresh, seasonal, vibrant vegetables provided by local Shodoshima Island farms HOMEMAKERS and Muro Farm and grown without the use of agricultural chemicals or chemical fertilizers. Particularly recommended is the island vegetable and ""three variety olive roast beef set meal"", which gives you the chance to taste three different, rare cuts of ""olive beef,"" a premium variety of Japanese black beef fed on pressed olives."

This tonkatsu pork cutlet shop is an old Takamatsu City favorite. Their irresistible cutlets with juicy pork and a crispy coating are made with close attention to detail. Everything on their menu is highly popular, including their light lunch cutlets and their pork loin tonkatsu featuring Olive Yumebuta pork. The several varieties of salt they have available in test tubes all go great with their tonkatsu.

I felt myself go back to 60-70s when I get into this restaurant. Theres a very long bar table and you can have a full view of the kitchen. There are plenty of local pork options on the menu and I...

    Kagawa Pref. Sakaideshi Irifunechou 1-5-14
A Japanese diner adjoining a market where you can eat exquisite seafood made with fresh fish caught in the Seto Inland Sea and delivered straight from the market. Unusual for a seafood diner, the restaurant is self-service in style, and customers can choose what they want to eat from among the actual dishes already laid out. There are direct sales shops in the market itself, and visitors are recommended to come here after their meal and purchase seafood sold at auction that very day at low prices.

Kagawa Main Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
