This restaurant, which opened in 2003, specializes in fresh seafood and marine products. It offers fresh fish caught off the Shonai coast of the Japan Sea for reasonable prices. The “funamori-zen” and “tobishima-zen” dishes, of which only 30 to 50 portions are available daily, offer incredible volume for an amazing price. The other sets and rice bowls are popular for offering hearty helpings of seafood. It’s about a 10-minute drive from JR Sakata Station.

A one minute walk in an area directly connected to Yamagata Station. An izakaya Japanese-style bar where you can enjoy local Yamagata cuisine and sakes. Relax in the sunken kotatsu-style seating area modeled after a cherry orchard. The Yamagata native chef prepares delicious cuisine using local fish and vegetables with an emphasis on freshness. The restaurant’s courses are particularly popular, giving diners the chance to enjoy seasonal dishes and a main course of pork shabu-shabu made with SPF (specific-pathogen-free) pork. Other seasonal Yamagata cuisine on offer includes imoni taro and meat stew, a local Yamagata specialty, and Yonezawa beef.

The Uesugi Hakushakutei (Uesugi Earl’s House), which was built as the residence for the 14th Earl Mochinori of the Uesugi clan on the site of Ninomaru in the former Yonezawa Castle in 1896, was burnt to the ground in the Great Fire of Yonezawa, but the building and the gardens, landscaped by Tokyo Hamarikyu, were completed in 1925. Following this it became the Uesugi Memorial Hall where local cuisine was served and exhibitions were held. It is the only place in Yonezawa where guests can enjoy ‘katemono’, or food items, created by Lord Yozan Uesugi and said to be the origin of Yonezawa’s local cuisine.

This is a Japanese cuisine restaurant in Showa Town, Tsuruoka City. This restaurant transformed a historic Edo period sake cellar into a dining place. The antique European furnishings go well with the thick vault doors and dried persimmon stained beams, creating a Japanese-modern atmosphere. Kaiseki fine Japanese cuisine is offered specializing in the local Yamagata beef, Shonai seafood, Shonai vegetables and of course the Yamagata brand rice, Tsuyahime. The space is available for weddings as well.

The vegetarian meal we were served was excellent. The old warehouse setting and decor was lovely. A full moon shone on us to top off the evening. A real treat.

At this tastefully decorated restaurant, you can eat cuisine using the best quality carp carefully selected by experts and grown in the clear mountain waters of the castle town, Yonezawa. The restaurant is a traditional Japanese structure, opulent and calm, created by purchasing a 200-year-old merchant hotel in Nakatsugawa and decorating it with old wood. The restaurant’s three special dishes are wonderful, not to mention the lunchtime-only set meals. It is around 11 minutes on foot from JR Yonezawa Station.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
