    Hokkaido Otarushi Inaho 3-16-13
Wakadori Jidai Naruto is a sushi and deep fried chicken shop famous for its deep fried half chicken, an Otaru specialty. The half chicken is heavily seasoned with salt and pepper and deep fried in very hot oil, creating a crispy skin with juicy meat, a veritable feast! Eaten together with rice makes for an excellent meal. The wakadori sushi set with deep fried half chicken, seven pieces of sushi and clear soup is a popular dish. The shop has a friendly atmosphere, people eating alone do not feel out of place, and take-outs are possible too. The nearest station is Otaru Station.

Arguably the best tasting ZANGI/FRIED CHICKEN of Otaru City in the whole of Hokkaido. The minute you start to eat the chicken, the more you crave for it. Prices are reasonably affordable to the...

At Uni Murakami you can taste additive-free sea urchin and Hokkaido food, located just outside Hakodate morning market. The restaurant is easy to get to, just a five-minute walk from Hakodate Station and the Red Brick Warehouse. The raw additive-free sea urchin has a rich sweetness without being dry or bitter. As soon as you eat it, the thick, creamy sweetness inherent to sea urchin quickly melts in your mouth. Prepared by chefs with vast knowledge of sea urchins, this kind of cuisine unique to a sea urchin restaurant such as this cannot be tasted anywhere else. With the restaurant’s motto of ‘local food for local consumption’, you can be sure to enjoy a whole range of exceptional Hokkaido food as well as sea urchin.

It’s really wonderful sea urchin cuisine . It’s my best. Appearance is beautiful. Umami is great. They also offer good service. I really want to visit again.

This is a fresh seafood restaurant in Tomakomai, Hokkaido. Since it's so close to Tomakomai port, it's very popular for the Marutoma Bowl made with fresh seasonal fish, and Hokki Curry, made with Hokki clams of which Tomakomai has the largest catch. Not only are the meals filling and cheap, the fact that it's so popular with locals has made it a major tourist spot.

We arrived around 11am. Already queued up for 20 mins before we get our seats. The queue became so long after 12pm. Shop will be close for 10 days August. Around 10-20 Aug

Located in Shakotan Town, Shakotan County, Hokkaido, Restaurant Misaki is open from late April to fall each year. The restaurant owner is a sea urchin fisherman and ensures that no additives are used in any of their signature sea urchin dishes. Especially popular is their raw red horse-dung sea urchin on rice which is served between June and August each year and limited to only 15 dishes per day! It’s a well-known restaurant regularly covered by the press, and often has long queues of eager customers waiting outside in the morning.

The staff was friendly and assisted us with ordering from the ticketing machine, the food came pretty fast. As a number of us don’t really take raw food, there were not many dishes to choose from.

Hachikyo is a local cuisine restaurant which uses carefully selected ingredients from all parts of Hokkaido and located only one minute walk from Susukino Station. The restaurant’s specialty is Tsukko Meshi, which is a bowl of rice covered with large amounts of salmon roe. As the staff pour the salmon roe over the rice they shout out “Oisah!”. The restaurant prides itself on being the only restaurant in the world which serves so much salmon roe. But it’s not just about the large amounts; they use only the best, most carefully selected salmon roe. The restaurant is decked out with ring buoys, fishing lamps, and fishing boat flags which give the characteristic feel of a banya, or simple lodging house used by fishermen.

This is a popular seafood market where people can buy seafood from Hokkaido over the counter in a corner of the outside market next to the Sapporo City Wholesale Market in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. There’s a wide variety of sea produce on display such as red king crab, horsehair crab, sea urchin, and Okhotsk atka mackerel. The quality of the crab is particularly good. The original salmon roe marinade, which received a Japan Souvenir Academy Award, has become popular as a classic Hokkaido gift. There is also a cafeteria where seafood rice bowls and other seafood dishes can be had, and at the restaurant Kaisen-Shokudo Kitano Gourmet-tei, you can cook food bought fresh from the market.

The first of a chain of conveyor belt sushi restaurants in Ugaura Town, Hakodate City, Hokkaido, Kantaro Sushi offers classic sushi created by expert sushi chefs. Fresh seafood is delivered every morning from the fish market, bringing a freshness that only comes from being in a port town. It’s a thriving restaurant frequented by local residents as well as people from afar.

"A Japanese diner located in the Sankaku Market in Otaru. This long-standing establishment was opened in 1945 and serves at reasonable prices the kind of fresh seafood only a restaurant owned and operated by a fish dealer can provide. Particularly popular is the ""Wagamama-don,"" a seafood rice bowl topped with your choice of three to four varieties of seafood from a list of 10 selections."

We had a mega seafood feast here that was super nice. The uni was fresh and the maguro was tasty. We loved the crab soup as well. Definitely worth a visit but it was not cheap!

Dedicated to the concept of Hakodate nigiri sushi, the restaurant serves dishes made primarily with seasonal ingredients from Hakodate. The rice is also grown in Hokkaido. Ingredients such as the scallops are prepared in the restaurant, and the shimesaba vinegared mackerel is homemade. The restaurant's sushi is characterized by its small amount of sushi rice coupled with large-sized seafood toppings. For customers looking to enjoy a variety of flavors, the restaurant offers a wide selection of sets such as three and five piece sushi assortments.

In addition to counter seats that young people, women and those returning from work can feel free to use to enjoy sushi, there are also convenient table seats and horigotatsu (dug out) seats where you can relax. Also, they purchase fresh fish every day from the port in order to prevent price increases, and their sushi uses good portions of ingredients that take advantage of their flavor. The two-tiered lunch boxes, only available at the Tokeidai store, is highly recommended. It is a bargain set menu item with eight pieces of sushi, a mini side of soba and chirashi scattered sushi, onion salad and three kinds of amuse bouche. Their homemade fried fish balls go great with alcohol.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
