    Sapporo Kanihonke Sapporo Ekimae Branch is five minutes’ walk from the south exit of JR Sapporo Station. It’s a popular restaurant where you can enjoy cuisine using crab sourced directly from the fishing grounds. It features a diverse menu, which includes the signature boiled king crab and ranges from hotpots such as Kanisuki which allows you to try red king crab and snow crab at the same time and Crab Kaiseki, which allows you to fully enjoy crab. There are various spaces from private rooms that can be used by even one or two people to a hall that can be used by up to 60.

    In the Otaru area, where there are many sushi restaurants, Sushiko is popular with a reputation for reasonable and delicious food. It is housed in a 90-year old storehouse that has plenty of character. Set meals range from 1,000–3700 yen, and it is also easy to enjoy Otaru sushi from 100 yen for one hand-rolled piece. On the first floor, there are table and bar seats while there is a raised tatami-floor seating area that can accommodate 16 people on the second floor. It is also reassuring that prices are clearly stated with no market prices.

    Kita no Ajigokoro Take-chan is a seafood restaurant which is a five-minute walk from Wakkanai Station. You can enjoy sushi, the seafood-bowl and local dishes which include the very fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and Okhotsk. A popular menu item is the fried North Pacific giant octopus, which is a Wakkanai specialty, and the shabu-shabu. There is a full course menu which allows you to enjoy produce from the local mountains and ocean together and can be ordered for one person or more.

The menu is full of culinary delights from the north, including scallops in their shells, oysters from Akkeshi, and Atka mackerel. Courses and set menus, as well as individual items, are all popular. The inside of the restaurant has a retro feel about it where the old brick warehouse was renovated. The place is always packed with friends, couples and families.

    Hachikyo is a local cuisine restaurant which uses carefully selected ingredients from all parts of Hokkaido and located only one minute walk from Susukino Station. The restaurant’s specialty is Tsukko Meshi, which is a bowl of rice covered with large amounts of salmon roe. As the staff pour the salmon roe over the rice they shout out “Oisah!”. The restaurant prides itself on being the only restaurant in the world which serves so much salmon roe. But it’s not just about the large amounts; they use only the best, most carefully selected salmon roe. The restaurant is decked out with ring buoys, fishing lamps, and fishing boat flags which give the characteristic feel of a banya, or simple lodging house used by fishermen.

    Kumanoya is a local cuisine restaurant located in Utoronishi, Shari Town, Shari County, Hokkaido. One of the defining features of Araiso cuisine, which uses food from the land and sea of the area around Shiretoko-utoro which is a world natural heritage site, is that it is committed to local produce and local consumption. Here you can enjoy a variety of dishes such as sashimi, seafood on rice, venison cooked in leaf, Shiretoko seafood noodles, and other delicacies. The restaurant owner is also Chairman of the Shiretoko Local Cuisine Society. The illusive salmon (young salmon), said to be caught only once out of 10,000 fish, is very occasionally served at the restaurant.

    This restaurant sits opposite the Utoro Shirietoku Rest Area on Route 334. The restaurant’s recommended dish is their raw sea urchin on rice, using locally sourced raw Ezo horse-dung sea urchin which is only available at certain times of the year. It is fresh, sweet and has an extremely rich flavor. Their topping rice bowl dish, where customers can choose their own fresh Hokkaido seafood topping, such as scallops, salmon roe, botan shrimp, and horsehair crab, etc. is also very popular. They also have a souvenir shop where you can buy seafood and specialty products. Both the restaurant and shop are open from 8:00 in the morning making this a great place to stop by for some breakfast when visiting the Shiretoko area.

    Located in Shakotan Town, Shakotan County, Hokkaido, Restaurant Misaki is open from late April to fall each year. The restaurant owner is a sea urchin fisherman and ensures that no additives are used in any of their signature sea urchin dishes. Especially popular is their raw red horse-dung sea urchin on rice which is served between June and August each year and limited to only 15 dishes per day! It’s a well-known restaurant regularly covered by the press, and often has long queues of eager customers waiting outside in the morning.

    Situated in a good location close to Sapporo Station is Sanchichokuso-Hokkaido, a popular restaurant where you can get all sorts of local Hokkaido treats at reasonable prices. They have plenty to choose from, including Akkesh oysters delivered fresh from the market every day, red king crab from the Sea of Okhotsk, Mongolian-style mutton barbecue, seafood sashimi, and so on. Their most popular dishes on the menu are the Treasure Ship, a deluxe assortment of 6 kinds of fresh fish, and the Salmon Roe Rice Bowl with copious amounts of roe loaded on top of the rice. There’s plenty of space for seating at tables as well as 46 private rooms.

    A seafood restaurant of a well-established fish store located in Yoichi Town, Yoichi County, Hokkaido. Kakizaki Shoten is a popular restaurant where you can get fresh Hokkaido seafood at great prices. Not only is it frequented by locals but it is also widely visited by backpackers, bikers, and tourists. Their specialty dish is the seafood rice bowl topped with plenty of seafood and tasty looking salmon roe. Depending on the season you can also enjoy limitedly available dishes such as sea urchin and northern shrimp, in addition to their grilled fish meals and sashimi. It’s such a popular restaurant you can’t get away from the queues at lunch time.

    We went there for lunch after going for Nikka Whisky tour. Very good seafood at very cheap prices! We had grilled fish, uni, seaweed salad and salmon meal. All were really nice! One thing to note is...

Their crab kaiseki course, in which you can fully appreciate the great taste of Hokkaido crab, is cooked and served using various methods to bring out the flavor of the crab, such as being steamed, roasted in its shell, grilled with miso, and cooked in a small pot. In other courses you can enjoy plenty of great tasting seasonal seafood and vegetables as well as horsehair crab. The restaurant is a great place to celebrate birthdays and other special occasions.

The restaurant is frequented by many sightseers and is a popular choice as a food and drink restaurant for foreign tourists too.

They have a wood deck area from where you can see before you the Sea of Okhotsk at Shiretoko, a world natural heritage site. For lunch you can have Utoro seafood rice bowl, or sea urchin rice bowl, in front of the invigorating views, and for dinner while you catch the beautiful evening sunset you can enjoy robatayaki, a Japanese-style barbecue over a charcoal fire. At dinner time priority is given to guests of Kokumin Shukusha Katsurada.
