Nasushiobara's favorite local dish is soup yakisoba, an interesting meal which looks like ramen and tastes like yakisoba. Mizuguruma is one of the most renowned restaurants serving soup yakisoba. Mizuguruma's exquisite soup yakisoba is made with sauce-flavored thin kinked noodles which go well with the soy sauce-based soup broth. A small pile of red pickled ginger is placed on top as an accent.

This old shop was founded as an oil shop during the Edo period, but then went on to manufacture miso. They use domestically-produced soy beans to make their “aburaden miso” —naturally fermented in a traditional wooden barrel, with no additives, to produce a rich, aromatic taste. At the dengaku miso shop in the corner, you can try konnyaku dengaku, tofu dengaku, and sato-imo dengaku. The five buildings, including a Meiji-period storehouse, are designated as National Tangible Cultural Properties, as well as a charming fireplace in the back.

Tochigi Main Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
