    A local cuisine restaurant in Omachi Town, Akita City, Akita Prefecture, where one can taste Akita’s fresh seafood and mountain food. The menu is a lineup of Akita specialties including kiritanpo (mashed rice pressed on a skewer and toasted) and shottsuru (salted and fermented fish sauce), sandfish, hinaijidori (a cross between Hinai-Dori and Rhode Island Red Chickens), with kiritanpo being served with the most pride. The kiritanpo using Akitakomachi rice from the Senpoku plain is known for its sweetness and aroma, and are rolled and baked stick by stick. The tasty aroma one gets from a sip of the hinaijidori broth soup is another draw for visitors. Aside from counter seats there are also private rooms and sunken kotatsu (warmer) seats, allowing you to enjoy your meal in peace.

    This Japanese pub is about a nine-minute walk from JR Yokote Station. The seafood here is brought in daily from the market and is extraordinarily fresh. Selected as one of the four devas in the “Yokote Yakisoba Four Devas Tournament,” this shop sees a constant stream of customers. The most touted dish would be “Yokote kuroge wagyu yakisoba.” It is a luxurious dish with simple Yokote yakisoba loaded up with kuroge wagyu from Yokote. The “Yokote kuroge wagyu horumon 5-piece set” lets you compare the wagyu intestines so it’s recommended.

    Bukeyashiki-dori Street is located at the heart of Kakunodate, considered the “little Kyoto of Michinoku.” Kakunodate Shichibei, a restaurant dedicated to local cuisine made with an abundance of local vegetables, stands at the entranceway to this area. The restaurant’s signature item is its fluffy “fuwatto” tofu made with soybeans grown using the waters of the Ou Mountain Range. Other Akita delicacies you can savor here include a Hinai-jidori chicken oyako-don rice bowl stewed in an earthen pot, and okariba-yaki grilled meats and vegetables. The oyako-don is served just after the beaten eggs are dropped on top to cook, giving the diner the option to eat the dish after the eggs have reached their desired level of firmness. The ability to enjoy your favorite oyako-don however runny or firm you prefer truly makes Shichibei stand out.

    Tsuneya has been operating at Kawabata—largest shopping district in Akita Prefecture—since 1961. The three pillars of the menu here are sukiyaki, eel, and Akita local cuisine. In particular the local cuisine kiritanpo stew with its matching Hinai chicken soup is praised by tourists and locals alike. As for seasonal dishes, there is sansei (edible wild plants) cooking in spring, Iwagaki oyster in summer, and mushroom cuisine in fall. Savoring the seasonal flavors is one more key feature of Tsuneya.

And when red sea bream is in season, they offer sashimi, salt-grilled and sea bream Zappa Jiru sets in the Meibutsu Madai Gozen (by reservation only).
