The menu also features dishes made with seafood such as conger eels and prawns as well as teppanyaki-grilled Okayama Black Wagyu Beef.

This veteran western-style restaurant was established in 1966. It's located just east of National Route 180 and the Sasagase River. They are best known for offering the Okayama specialty Ebimeshi. Their Ebimeshi features black rice topped with prawns, and they make it with the same old-fashioned flavor they always have. Other items include Japanese rice omelets with prawns and limited menu only in winter such as Japanese rice omelets with prawns and white sauce, rice gratin with prawns, funameshi rice bowls with minced crucian carp. They also have lots of standard fare like curry and rice, hamburger steaks, and cutlets.

An atmospheric townhouse in the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter underwent renewal in 2014 to become Sakuraso. Reservations are accepted, and they will try to accommodate specific dietary issues and requests. 10-minute walk from JR Kurashiki Station.

    Okayama Maniwa-shi Katsuyama 1162F
This restaurant is about a 15-minute walk from JR Chugoku-Katsuyama Station. It is managed by the sake brewery Gozenshu Tsuji Honten, which dates back to the Edo period. The shop is located in a remodeled 150-year-old sake brewery building, and offers cuisine made with sake lees and koji, like only a sake brewer could make. The shoyu koji and shio koji, flavorings made with special koji molds, are all made in-house. Their Nishikura-zen meal, which includes a pre-dinner sake, sake lees pickles, and sweet, alcohol free amazake, has been popular here since 1989.

Nishikura has recently been renovated, with the restaurant moving to the 1st floor of the building, with the shop and a little cafe on the ground floor. The food is a little expensive, but worth it...

A five-minute drive from the Tsuyama Interchange on the Chugoku Expressway. This restaurant is located just off of National Route 53. Inside the small, traditional shop they offer counter seating and table seating as well as a small tatami room for those with small children in tow. Also recommended is their original Horumon Udon Omelet, which cooks offal and udon noodles in a soy sauce base and then wraps it with a fluffy egg omelet. Take-out is also available.

Okayama Areas

around-area-map

Overshadowed by Hiroshima to the west and the Kansai region to the east, Okayama is an easy spot to miss but a nature-rich gem where the Seto Inland Sea laps at its toes and peach and grape farms complete its interior. One of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, Koraku-en in Okayama city is well worth a visit before progressing to Kurashiki, where preserved wooden Edo buildings line the picturesque canal.
