    This is a restaurant in Nagahama City where you can taste the home-cooked specialty of “Yakisaba Somen” (fine white noodles with grilled mackerel) which is characteristic of Kohoku. This specialty of boiled fine white noodles and meaty grilled mackerel arouses an appetite for a somewhat strong seasoning. The set menu is also substantial; there are also “O-zen” (a four-legged tray for festive food) which can be enjoyed together with grilled mackerel sushi and “Toban-yaki” (a roast on a ceramic plate) of Omi beef. The store now makes use of a merchant’s house constructed approximately 200 years ago, having in some respects an aura which feels nostalgic. It is also known as a famous shop where queues can be seen.

    An eel and river fish specialty store and restaurant located in 2 Chome Sumiyoshi Imazu-cho, Takashima City. The restaurant part of the facility serves hitsumabushi, eel rice bowls, unaju rice boxes, eel steamed seiromushi style, eel rice bowl and soba noodle sets, and kaiseki course cuisine and sashimi set meals made with river fish. The adjoining shop sells products like eel chazuke—plain-grilled eel stewed with Japanese pepper.

    I purchased a lunch box with grilled eel, and had a quick bite in a cold platform. As the eel melted on the tongue, I wished I had had enough time to sit back and enjoy eel in Nishimoto Restaurant.

Everything from raising the cattle at the establishment’s own farm to the processing and sale of the meat is handled directly by the establishment. The establishment’s butcher shop sells Omi beef cuts and foods like Omi beef misozuke and side dishes. The adjoining restaurant serves sukiyaki, shabushabu, teppanyaki, steaks, beef stew, Hamburg steaks, and Omi beef bento box lunches.

    近江牛を味わえるレストランも併設された精肉店。レストランは、休日の食事時は満席で、外で皆さん並んでいました 精肉店では、お肉のほかにコロッケやメンチカツなども売っていて、店舗横のベンチに座って頂けます。こちらは並んでいません。 コロッケは普通のタイプと甘口のすき焼きコロッケがありました。どちらも揚げたて、衣がサクサクで美味しかったです。

The restaurant serves traditional kaiseki course cuisine, gozen meals for groups, and trout and other rice bowls made using mountain river fish such as Biwa trout, a species endemic to Lake Biwa. The restaurant also offers a traditional Japanese Buddhist vegetarian course meal (reservation required). In addition, visitors can try trout fishing in the river in front of the restaurant or bring in fish caught at the nearby Samegai Trout Farm’s fish ponds to have the restaurant cook them.

    この醒井楼は醒ヶ井のちょっと山奥っぽいところにあって、JR醒ヶ井駅から、ハイキングしていくのにはちょうどいい距離でいた。鱒釣りもできて、おいしい鱒料理を食べることができて良かったです。

The restaurant uses local Omi rice from Shiga Prefecture, a rich broth, a bit of soy sauce, and shijimi clams from Lake Biwa and cooks them together. Diners can choose from four dinners, and all of them include freshly made Clam Kamameshi and red miso soup with clams, although they all include different side dishes. A large helping of Omi no Obanzai (assorted seafood and vegetables) accompanied by a moderate helping of grebe is especially popular.

    しじみ釜めしは、注文を受けてから炊くので、少し時間がかかります。私は、しじみ釜めしカレーを頼みましたが、意外にしじみとカレーはマッチしていました。最後にチーズをのせて焼きカレーにしてもらえます。

    鮒寿司を食べたことがなかったので、お土産に買って帰ろうと思っていたら、店員さんから、奥のレストランで食べられますとのことでしたので、鮒寿司と鮎寿司をいただきました。大満足でした。

Visitors to Shiga prefecture are almost always hopping east across the prefectural border from Kyoto, and they are almost certainly Lake Biwa-bound. Covering an area of 670 square kilometers, Lake Biwa makes up the bulk of Shiga prefecture, with beautiful lakeside paths that offer myriad walking and cycling opportunities, connecting a string of museums, shrines, and picturesque views that finally lead you to Hikone Castle on the eastern side of the lake.
