    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Ukyo-ku Sagano Toriimoto
This museum is Japan's only registered museum of ancient dolls and opened in Sagano, Kyoto, in 1988. Their collection includes over 200 thousand traditional dolls gathered from around Japan including Saga dolls, Gosho dolls, Kamo dolls, karakuri marionettes, costumed dolls, Takeda dolls, and miniature dolls. In 2011 nearly 4000 of the dolls were registered as Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of Japan.

I had seen the mixed reviews of the Japanese Folk Dolls Museum and had not planned to visit as I explored Arashiyama. However, as I walked by, the signs and building looked so inviting that I...

The area is situated northwest of Togetsukyo Bridge. In addition to a children's park, there are two rest areas and two observatories. One of the area's greatest charms is its hilly scenery. Japanese red pines as well as cherry trees, maples, and Rhododendron kaempferi grow on the grounds, and during the flowering season visitors can enjoy the sight of them in full bloom. In addition, tomb for the cremated remains of Emperor Go-Saga is located inside the park on its east side.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
