    At this market complex, you can enjoy seeing, buying, and eating the charms of Wakasa. The complex offers a popular 60-minute boat cruise which enables riders to take in the local dynamic scenery formed by the stormy waters of the Sea of Japan. The Sotomo Cruising boat ride operates from March to November and is offered four times a day to general customers and also runs up to four times a day for private groups (when reservations have been made). The first floor of the complex is a souvenir store carrying famous products from Wakasa. The second floor is a restaurant serving an abundance of seasonal ocean delicacies.

    Located in Wakaba Town, Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture, this is the largest seafood market selling products from the Sea of Japan, and is host to 70 establishments like seafood shops and restaurants. Among the market stalls you’ll hear the energetic voices of the market vendors trying to sell their wares and you’ll see a wide variety of seafood delicacies on all of the stalls trucked in directly from Tsuruga Port such as fresh seafood, processed foods, and the local specialty, kombu seaweed. The seafood rice bowls, popular with tourists, are topped with a whole variety of different foods and all at a good price. Each bowl comes packed with a huge amount of seafood such as tuna, sea bream, shrimp, salmon roe and salmon, etc. The market officially opens at 10 a.m. but apart from the restaurants most stalls start trading from 8:30 a.m. onwards.

    This shop, which specializes in Wakasa lacquered chopsticks, manufactures and sells Wakasa lacquered chopsticks carefully crafted by artisans as well as hexagonal chopsticks that fit children’s hands. Each beautiful pair is carefully studded with egg or sea shells and painted with dozens of layers of coloured lacquer, but remains easy to use. Personalised chopsticks such as for couples are also available.

    外にある百円、二百円をカゴに入れて自分でとっていく箸の販売。見ていたら店員が近くに来てジロジロ。万引きでもするのかと警戒、気分が悪い。それならこんな売り方をして欲しくない。レジがある店内に入れておいたらどうでしょうか。おすすめを聞いても好きなのを選んだら、です。せっかく旅行で立ち寄ったのにつまらない。

    東京に住んでいた時は西武デパートによく買い物をしたもの、ここに有るんだと懐かしく感じてしまいました。バブルのころは、贈り物の紙袋は西武でなければという時代も有りました。内部そのものは普通のどこにでもあるような代わり映えのしないデパートです。

    A souvenir shop and restaurant in Anto, Mikuni-cho, Sakai City. Here you'll find local Fukui sake and beer as well as famous local sweets, souvenirs, and pickled goods from Umemiya Tatsuo Tukemono Hompo. In the restaurant they serve set meals, seafood rice bowls, and noodle dishes made with local seafood. A specialty of the shop is high quality Junmai Ginjo Sake delivered directly from the brewery and sold by volume.

    This center is a seafood market housing 11 fish shops, most of which are intermediate wholesalers, selling freshly-caught fish from local fishing ports and dried and processed marine products. It is also popular for its charcoal brazier area in a corner of the car park where you can cook the fish or dried products that you bought at the center. The best time to visit is the morning.

    10軒くらいの海産物店が軒を連ねており、食堂もあります。お店によりますが、7時くらいからお昼までの営業ですが早い時間だと入荷前だったりと訪問タイミングが難しいところです。名物の鯖や小鯛の笹漬等、魅力的なものが並んでいました。

    A confectioner located along Shichiken-dori Street in Motomachi, Ono City. This long-standing shop was founded over 100 years ago and is known for their famous Imo-Kintsuba treat. It's only sold for a limited time starting every year in September and many people come even from other prefectures in search of the sweet flavor of local Ono grown sweet potatoes.

    Dansuke is a long-established gomadofu (crushed sesame seeds boiled in water and chilled like tofu) maker, founded in 1888, which is located on National Route 364 in Aratani, Eiheiji Town, Yoshida County. Packs of Nama Gomadofu (raw gomadofu, which is not reheated after packaged) can be purchased at the firm’s direct-outlet store. The café adjacent to the workshop where the gomadofu is made and stored serves a variety of confectionery products and beverages, including raw gomadofu and brown sugar zenzai (red bean soup) made with gomadofu, etc.

    店内は新しく、綺麗です。 豆腐づくしの5000円のコースを頂きました。 豆腐を色々な形で楽しませてくれようとする気持ちは伝わるのですが、あともうちょっとで美味しくなるだろう、残念な結果に終わっているお品も…。 お子様プレートも頼みましたが、こども向けのはずなのにドレッシングがかなり生姜が効いて、見た目も地味な色合いで少し残念。 全体的に値段と内容のバランスが取れていないと感じました。

    At the Umenosato Kaikan, they perform all the operations up to shipping the product, from pickling plums to airing them. The sales corner, where they offer umeboshi, as well as a rich variety of other processed products, is popular. And at the “Plum picking field”, they sell freshly harvested green plums from mid to late June.

    梅の加工商品が豊富に取り揃えられています。特に福井梅の梅干しは、漬け込みから土用干しなどすべて手作業で行っているそうです。また、梅ワインや梅ドリンク、梅のドライフルーツなどここでしか販売していないと思われる珍しい商品もあります。

    Opened in 2013, this is a popular bakery that always offers 50-60 types of bread and pastries, changing its wares according to the season. There is a place where you can eat in—it’s nice to be able to eat the bread you’ve bought straight away. The cream bun generously filled with home-made custard is recommended.

    This local specialty products store carries an abundance of Fukui's most famous goods, including Kitamaebune no Kawamoto's kombu (kelp) products, and homemade yakisaba (grilled mackerel) sushi. A popular destination, the store also has a space where you can watch how Fukui delicacies are made and even try making some yourself. Of particular note, this is the only place you can watch a live demonstration of the process involved in making tesuki oboro kombu (handmade shredded kelp), a rare traditional technique dating back 400 years.
