An oyster restaurant located in the Omotesando Shotengai shopping arcade in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Kakiya is renowned for its inexpensive oyster dishes made with quality oysters raised off of Miyajima as well as Jigozen oysters, a Hiroshima brand oyster variety. The restaurant’s signature menu item is its yakigaki oysters grilled to perfection at the front of the restaurant by seasoned veterans. No special seasoning is added to these vaunted gems which fill the mouth with the flavor of sea salt and the inherent deliciousness of the oyster meat. Kakiya’s kakimeshi oysters over rice and creamy, milky raw oysters are also popular choices. The interior is decorated in a modern, Japanese style.

    Hiroshima Pref. Hatsukaichishi Miyajimaguchi 1-5-11
Tanikichi is a restaurant located on the second floor of a long-established store, Anagomeshi Ueno, about two minutes on foot from Miyajimaguchi Station. Both stores are run by the same owner. Tanikichi offers the local Miyajima food anagomeshi, grilled conger eel on a bed of delicious rice, served in a kettle-cooked pot. The taste of the eel and dashi with the smell of the crisp, slightly burned rice at the bottom of the pot is the restaurant’s signature dish. Their anago no shirayaki (plain grilled eel) together with a glass of sake is a particular favorite here. The restaurant only serves course meals. Tanikichi has the nostalgic atmosphere of the Taisho period. It’s a nice place to relax and enjoy a good meal after a good walk. Advance reservations possible.

    Hiroshima Pref. Kureshi Nakadori 3-2-3
This well established chicken restaurant on Nakadori Street, Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture was founded in 1951. It is said to be where the Kure specialty of miso-daki, carefully prepared chicken skin simmered in lots of miso, originated from. The slowly simmered chicken skin has a soft, melty texture which goes really well with a glass of sake. As well as yakitori (grilled chicken), guests can also taste seasonal local foods such as seafood from Setouchi and oysters, another classic dish. Managed by a husband and wife couple, the restaurant has a cozy feel with seating at the counter or on tatami mats.

Marumen is directly managed by the okonomiyaki noodle producer and wholesaler, Isono Seimen, and is located on the second floor of their factory in Higashi Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. Of the ingredients in the Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, the noodles are especially good. The flavorsome noodles, crispy yet with a chewy texture, are not overcome by the flavor of the sauce. As well as their most popular dish Marumen-yaki, they have a wide range of other okonomiyaki on the menu including the deluxe okonomiyaki packed full of meat, squid, shrimp, mochi rice, squid tempura and spring onion, and teppanyaki (iron plate grilled food) from late afternoon. From the restaurant visitors can see the workings of the noodle factory’s progress. The place is popular with celebrities and players from the Hiroshima Toyo Carp baseball team, with autographs of the famous people hanging on the walls of the store.

Takaya is a popular okonomiyaki restaurant in Naka Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture, frequented by not only the local regulars but also many tourists and celebrities. The restaurant owner who trained at Mitchan, a restaurant said to be the birthplace of Hiroshima style okonomiyaki, opened his own restaurant in 2004. Their fluffy savory pancake mix with 12 different kinds of ingredients is especially popular. The light okonomiyaki pancakes which unusually are not pressed down on the hot plate grill to cook faster are a perfect blend of sweet cabbage, crispy noodles and their own original sauce. Seating is at the counter only. With the teppanyaki hot plate grill set up in front of customers at the counter it’s a great place to enjoy some hot okonomiyaki.

Hiroshima Pref. Fukuyamashi Tomochou Tomo 670
Onfunayado Iroha is a boutique Japanese style hotel with restaurant located in Tomo Town, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This building, a restored old townhouse (the former Uoya Manzo’s), is where the negotiations for compensation took place after a naval collision between two ships, the warship of the Kishu Domain and the Iroha-maru, the ship of Sakamoto Ryoma’s Kaientai (private navy) which lead to its sinking. The first floor is home to a restaurant which serves the specialty sea bream, and on the second floor is the ryokan with its appealingly modern stained glass among the sedate Japanese charm. The building is also noted for the design input it received at the time of its restoration from Hayao Miyazaki, the famous animation artist.

Reichan is an okonomiyaki restaurant located on the second floor of the ASSE shopping mall directly connected to Hiroshima Station. The restaurant is so popular that there’ll often be a queue of people waiting outside during peak times. The long established store was founded as a street stall back in 1957 and only fully trained staff are allowed to make their prized okonomiyaki. The compacted okonomiyaki, made with fresh cabbage, meat, eggs and fresh noodles is a Hiroshima food tasting just as great now as it ever has. They have seating at tables or at the counter and individual customers or groups are more than welcome.

We were amazed at how delicious Reichan’s dishes were at a fraction of the cost of Indian cuisine in London, L.A., etc. We over-ordered after navigating the casual and comfortable restaurant’s...
