A long-standing anagomeshi (grilled conger eel over rice) restaurant established in 1901 located a two minute walk from Miyajimaguchi Station. The restaurant’s famed anagomeshi features fresh-grilled conger eel (anago) piled tightly packed on top of a bed of rice cooked with a broth made from conger eel bones. This long-selling favorite was originally created to offer as a bento box lunch sold in front of the nearby train station when the restaurant was founded. The restaurant is also famous for the lines of customers waiting to eat inside that constantly form out its door. Customers eating in can enjoy flavors and dishes differing from those offered for bento box lunches, such as piping hot, fresh-made anagomeshi and shirayaki conger eel grilled without seasoning. Bento box lunches can be reserved. No reservations are accepted for the restaurants sit-down space.

    Hiroshima Pref. Hatsukaichishi Miyajimaguchi 1-5-11
Tanikichi is a restaurant located on the second floor of a long-established store, Anagomeshi Ueno, about two minutes on foot from Miyajimaguchi Station. Both stores are run by the same owner. Tanikichi offers the local Miyajima food anagomeshi, grilled conger eel on a bed of delicious rice, served in a kettle-cooked pot. The taste of the eel and dashi with the smell of the crisp, slightly burned rice at the bottom of the pot is the restaurant’s signature dish. Their anago no shirayaki (plain grilled eel) together with a glass of sake is a particular favorite here. The restaurant only serves course meals. Tanikichi has the nostalgic atmosphere of the Taisho period. It’s a nice place to relax and enjoy a good meal after a good walk. Advance reservations possible.

Inachu is a restaurant on the Omotesando Shopping Street in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, famous for being the first restaurant in Miyajima to sell take-out bento anago-meshi (eel on rice packed lunch box). A restaurant within the long established ryokan, Kinsuikan, in Miyajima Town, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, with its large landmark sign of a racoon dog. Guests at this popular restaurant can have dishes made with the local specialty eel and oysters. Their signature dish is the steamed conger eel on rice, a dish of boiled eel on a bed of rice neatly arranged in a porcelain box and steamed. The restaurant’s fried oysters meal and oyster curry are also popular choices and go together perfectly with one of their many local sakes.

We chose this restaurant as it was deemed to be vegetarian friendly. The only vegetarian items were a raw vegetable salad which I would call a plate of raw vegetables and a plate of chips. There...

Kurawanka is an Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki restaurant opened in 1991, located near the wharf of Miyajima, a World Heritage island. You may find yourself eating more and more of this Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki with its heaps of cabbage. You can add toppings like cheese, scallops, or mochi, but the oysters are recommended. Oyster teppanyaki (iron plate grilled food), grilled oysters with ponzu sauce, and scallop teppanyaki are magnificent. Five minutes on foot from Miyajima Wharf.

I was in Miyajima for the day and was with a group of six friends. Around dinner time we were looking for an Okonomiyaki restaurant and found Kurawanka. The restaurant was pretty empty, so a table...

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
